Our Purpose
Perfecting any skill, whether shooting a free throw, mastering a song on the piano, or rolling pie dough takes regular practice and attention. This is no different from the very important skill of reading. It is easy to think that 7th-grade students, who are often quite good readers, don’t need consistent time dedicated to practice. We believe that they do. We also believe that this “practice” will begin to turn, if it hasn’t already, into a love of reading. This year, students will be pushed to practice the skill of reading as much as possible through a Book Review Program that will expose them to new authors and exciting novels, all at their individual reading levels. Through this experience, we will unlock interesting ideas and adventures while improving vocabulary, comprehension, and writing skills.
Student Responsibilities
Choose novels at an appropriate reading level
Bring a novel to every class: Their novel is ALWAYS required in Language Arts, but they may find time to read in other classes. It is always a good idea to have their book with them at all times.
At-home Reading: Reading at home will be necessary to finish novels by assigned due dates. How many minutes/days per week, depends on the reader. An event on Mondays may mean a little extra reading time on Tuesdays. A test in Math may mean allocating your time differently that week. Students need to use their planner to map out their home reading schedule.
Meet all due dates
If the novel is long, meet with the teacher to discuss requirements. Books over 300 pages can start a discussion. Due to length, some novels count as two, three, or even four books.
When the novel is finished, complete and turn in a Book Review.
Novels must be turned in with reviews so that assignments can be checked for authenticity.
Grading
Students will receive a reading grade on their completed Book Review Cards. The program is 20% of their grade, and the following scale will be utilized each nine-week grading period beginning in the 2nd quarter:
