Absences - If your child is absent please notify the office at 908-276-7220 and send me an email at michele.keating@mysts.org
Arrival - All students are to arrive in the Gym for morning assembly by 8:00 (doors open at 7:40).
Assessment - A variety of formal and informal assessments are conducted throughout the school year. This helps me not only measure your child’s progress, but also tailor instruction to his/her unique needs.
Attendance is vital to your child’s academic success. Please help them be at school and on time each day, and stay in school for the full day, that they are healthy enough to be here.
Birthdays - An individually packaged snack (Little Bites, fruit snacks, granola bars) can be sent in to celebrate your child’s birthday with the class. Please notify me a week in advance to coordinate when you will be sending in your snack. If you are sending in birthday party invitations you must include the entire class. Summer birthday’s will be celebrated in June.
ClassDojo I use this app for classroom communication. It’s a safe way for me to share pictures and information about what's happening in the classroom.
Communication between home and school is vital to your child’s success. Together we are partners in your child’s education. You can reach me through a handwritten note, an email, a phone call or a message through ClassDojo.

Family - In our classroom we are a family. I work to cultivate a family atmosphere where we greet each other each morning, work together, share our struggles and joys, look out for one another, treat each other with kindness and respect, celebrate our successes, and say goodbye at the end of the day.
Friday Folder - Every Friday you will receive your child’s work from the week in their Friday Folder. Please take some time to review the work with your child. . Please sign any papers that must be returned to me. Remove everything else form the folder .
Going to the Bathroom - The children will have many opportunities to use the bathroom during the school day. Please make an extra effort to ensure they use the bathroom at home before they come to school each morning.
Gym - We will have Gym twice a week on Tuesday and Wednesday. Please make sure your child wears their Gym uniform and sneakers on these days.
Homework - Please check your child's Home Folder and Planner each night and initial your child’s Planner to let me know your child has completed their homework. It should never be a struggle for your child, either academically or emotionally. If you find that it is, let’s meet and talk about it, and together come up with strategies or modifications to help.

Independence - Second graders are becoming more independent. We should celebrate and foster this independence while still acknowledging that they need guidance and prompting.

Jacket sleeves -
Please practice pulling sleeves inside out (put your arm in and pull towards you) with your child. This helps when we have to line up for recess and dismissal.
Kindness - It matters in and out of the classroom. An emphasis is placed on speaking and acting kindly towards others.

Money - When sending money into class please place it in a labeled envelope or baggie. The label should have your child’s first and last name, grade (2A), what the money's for, and the amount enclosed.
Map Growth Testing - Second graders will participate in Map Growth testing during the fall, winter and spring.
Manners - I encourage the children to use proper manners. I love to hear please & thank you.
Name - Please write your child’s name on all of their belongings. It’s so easy for things to get misplaced or left behind in another area of the building (lunchroom, playground, etc...). Writing your child’s name will help ensure that their belongings are returned to them.
Online Resources -
Our Language Arts, Social Studies and Science programs all offer remote access. Look for additional information on how to help your child log into each of these resources.
Pictures - I love to take pictures of our class learning and having fun throughout the year, and then share them with you through ClassDojo.

Quiet Reading - Second grade is an important time for children to strengthen reading skills. In addition to learning focus and patience.
Your child will have 20-30 minutes of Quiet Reading time in the classroom. Also, they will be assigned 15-25 minutes of reading each night for homework.
Religion - The children will be making their First Penance and First Holy communion this year. More information will be going home
Recess - The children will have recess for 15 minutes a day.
Report Cards - Report Cards will be distributed electronically in December, March, and on the last day of school in June.

Scholastic Book Orders - Occasionally I will send home book order forms. It is an easy and convenient way to order grade level appropriate materials for your child. By purchasing books the class will I will accumulate points to be be used to purchase books for our classroom library,.
Transportation Home - Please inform me in writing by putting a note in your child’s Home Folder, emailing me or by calling the school office if your child will be going to aftercare, will be picked up early for an appointment, coming in late due to an appointment, or if a different person will be picking them up at dismissal. This way, the children and I both feel at ease at dismissal time.

Uniqueness - Your child is a unique individual, with specific strengths, challenges, and interests. The uniqueness of your child will be celebrated while learning strategies are tailored to meet his/her needs.
Vacation -
School policy is against taking lengthy vacations during school days but if something should come up please let me know ASAP so that we can work together to help your child “catch up” on the work they will be missing. No work will be given out beforehand. Anything missed will be handed out when the child returns from vacation.

Zzzzz - Sleep is absolutely vital to your child’s success. A sleepy child simply does not have the capacity to pay attention in class, learn and retain new knowledge, or work with peers to the best of his/her ability. As a parent, you know the optimum amount of sleep your child needs to be at his/her best, please help them get that sleep.
