* We will be starting an art project in a few weeks for which we need a glass (not plastic) bottle, think small juice bottle/pint Mason jar size. Please send one in with your child by March 31.
* Please have your child bring/wear boots every day through the spring and make sure they have indoor shoes. The playground and path to Sawyer get VERY muddy in the late winter/spring. Until the snow is gone, the school rule of snow gear to play in the snow will continue.
* Please send in 'found art' materials, such as toilet/paper towel rolls, magazines, empty small boxes, etc. The kids have a blast creating with a wide range of materials during choice time!
* We have a mid-morning snack every day so please provide a snack and a water bottle. We are an allergy aware classroom so please do not include nut products for snack (please note that this includes Nutella), lunch is fine to have nut products. Children can get milk at lunch time but we do not get milk for snack time. If your child's classroom snack requires a spoon or fork, please send one in their lunch bag. We do not have the means to heat or store food items so all food needs to be edible from their lunch box. As much as possible, please help your child to be able to open/close their own containers.
* Please have regular conversations with your child about how to calm their body, ask for help, and make respectful choices while at school. As we say in KB, practice makes better!
* Please empty your child's home folder and backpack daily and send the home folder in every morning and indicate which school lunch your child is getting on the menu in your child's folder every day they get a school lunch.
* Please be sure your child has an extra bag (a sturdy, reusable bag, not a plastic grocery bag) in their backpack every day. There are often days where there are big projects, boots, coats, etc. that don't fit in their backpacks.
* Here are volunteer opportunities for families:
You must have a current CORI with the school (not another organization) to sign up to volunteer.
Come to the Emerson office and speak with Kim Laster (klaster@nrsd.net) to complete a CORI.
Mystery Reader - Come join KB and share favorite books! Sign up for a date that works best for you and choose a couple of favorite stories to read to the group. (Optional: Include a few fun facts and see if your child can guess it's you!)
Volunteers - sign up to lend a hand with your KB children!

* We are using the 'Zones of Regulation' as part of our social-emotional curriculum in which the 'zones' are designated by colors (green, yellow, blue, red). We have identified types of emotions for each zone and talked about strategies that can help us when we're in different zones. We have discussed that all emotions are valid but we need to be aware of how we express them and be sure we're not hurting someone, either through words or actions. These conversations will be ongoing throughout the year. Here is the Zones of Regulation slideshow so you know the language we are using with the children.
* Please be sure you are contacting ALL parties necessary (Ms. Boyle, Mrs. Hidalgo, PickUp Patrol) on days when there is a change in routine for your child (late arrival, early dismissal, change in dismissal routine, etc.).
* The children go out for recess every day, even if it's raining, (unless there is extreme weather/temperatures) so please be sure children are appropriately dressed for the weather. In the warm weather, water bottles and sturdy shoes/sandals (not flip flops) and in cold weather, long pants/leggings/tights, hats, mittens, and boots are encouraged, layers are always good.
* Please send indoor shoes on the days that the children wear boots to school. We try really hard to keep wet, dirty boots out of the classroom.
* Do your best to get your child to school on time. School starts at 8:35 and if your child comes after that time you must walk them into the Emerson office and sign them in. Also, drivers should not be getting out of the car in the drop off/pick up line, please work with your child so they can get in and out of the car independently. Parents who do morning drop off and/or afternoon pick up need to drive around Emerson, not to the horseshoe at the front of the building.
* Please send your child in appropriate footwear every day. Sneakers or sturdy sandals with backs are safer for playing on the playground and they'll need sneakers on gym days. If skirts/dresses are worn, please be sure shorts/leggings are worn underneath as Kindergarten is full of flipping, climbing, and sitting criss-cross on the rug.
* Children should be appropriately dressed for gym on B days. Short sleeve shirts and sneakers are a must, even during the winter, and we encourage shorts, lightweight pants, or leggings. If your child tends to run warm, they're welcome to wear shorts under sweats in the cold weather if they'll be more comfortable.
* If your child uses their spare clothes, please send in new clothes as soon as you can.
