Child Development Permits

Child Development / Early Care & Education

Child Development Permits are required to work for Federal Head Start, Early Head Start and Migrant Head Starts. They are also required for working in State Preschools, Public Schools, and preferred for other types of programs.

Credentialed Teachers who teach Transitional Kindergarten are required to have 24 ECE/CD units.

Get started early! Community Colleges offer all required courses, many online.

  • Begin with 6 units as an Assistant Teacher:

    • At CI ECS/PSY 150: Child Growth & Development and ECS 221: Child, Family & Community

  • Complete Certificate in ECE

  • Complete Supervised Experiences in Practicum

  • Complete Associate’s Degree

  • Qualify to Supervise

  • Bachelor’s / Master’s Degree required for most Director positions
