ATTENDANCE POLICY

District policy requires students to be in school 90% of the year in order to earn credit. This means that 14 or more unexcused absences will affect eligibility for graduation. Absenteeism, Tardiness and Truancy can have other negative effects on academic achievement beyond credit requirements. They can also affect eligibility for participation in athletic or extracurricular activities.

ABSENTEEISM

A student may be absent if he/she misses more than 15 minutes of class. When a student reaches 5 unexcused absences, his/her status will be reviewed by an attendance committee. When a student reaches 10 unexcused absences a letter will be sent to the parents/guardians informing them that their student is at risk of failing to meet the requirements to pass an academic year. When a student reaches 14 unexcused absences he/she may be denied credit in classes missed or held back a year in school.

Written or verbal notification from parent/guardian is necessary to excuse an absence. This should be addressed within 24 hours of posted absence. Any medical notes should be brought into the attendance secretary upon the student’s return to school. Students are expected to make up work from classes missed. Once a student is checked out, he/she may not remain on campus–doing so is considered truancy. Students are required to leave campus after checking out. A student must be in attendance at least half of the day (3 full class periods) to participate in extracurricular activities
