Course Description:
Sixth grade art students attend art three days a week for one trimester. Projects are based primarily on the principles and elements of art, the state learning results, and the district’s visual arts benchmarks and outcomes. Art elements such as color, line, texture, shape, space, form, and value, are emphasized throughout the school year to help guide the students toward their artistic goals. In addition, 6th grade art classes explore a number of techniques such as drawing, painting, sculpture, and pottery. Throughout the trimester students will use materials such as oil pastels, clay, pencil, watercolors, and printing ink, and tempera. In most cases, students will complete the projects listed below:
Self Portrait Series
Learning Goal: Students will become aware of facial proportions, demonstrate self expression, and experience different techniques for applying value. Students will become familiar with different styles of portraiture.
Clay Slab Sculpture
Learning Goal: Students will become familiar with the three hand building techniques (slab, coil, pinch), and different means for creating texture in clay.
Tint and Shade Painting
Learning Goal: Students will learn and illustrate the use of value, tints, shades. Students will work with color theory.
Print Making
Learning Goal: Students will work with concepts such as color theory, compositions, and positive and negative space.
Perspective Drawing:
Learning Goal:Students will learn about and illustrate one point perspective, using a horizon line and vanishing points.
