Physical Science Lab Safety Contract

Mrs. Will’s Class 2019-20

1. Conduct yourself in a responsible manner at all times in the laboratory.

2. Always obtain your teacher’s permission before beginning an activity. Listen for any special instructions the teacher gives you before the lab begins.

3. Follow all written and verbal instructions carefully. If you do not understand a direction or part of a procedure, ASK YOUR TEACHER BEFORE PROCEEDING WITH THE ACTIVITY.

4. Use the safety equipment provided for you. Know the location and proper use of the fire extinguisher, eyewash station, fire blanket, and fire alarm.

5. Horseplay, practical jokes, and pranks are dangerous and prohibited. This will result in immediate removal from the lab and exclusion from possible future labs.

6. Never eat or drink in the lab, and never use glassware as food or drink containers.

7. Never inhale chemicals. Do not taste any substances.

8. If you spill any chemical, wash it off immediately with water. Report the spill immediately to your teacher.

9. Perform only those experiments authorized by your teacher. Carefully follow all instructions, both written and oral. Unauthorized experiments are not allowed.

10. Observe good housekeeping practices. Work areas should be kept clean and tidy at all times.

11. Dispose of all chemical waste properly. Never mix chemicals in sink drains. Sinks are to be used only for water. Check with your teacher for disposal of chemicals and solutions.

12. Keep hands away from face, eyes, mouth, and body while using chemicals or lab equipment. Wash your hands with soap and water after performing all experiments.

13. Experiments must be personally monitored at all times. Do not wander around the room, distract other students, startle other students or interfere with the laboratory experiments of others.

14. Know the locations and operating procedures of all safety equipment including: first aid kit(s), and fire extinguisher. Know where the fire alarm and the exits are located.

15. If a fire should break out in the classroom, or if your clothing should catch fire, smother it with the fire blanket. NEVER RUN.

16. Report any accident or injury, no matter how small, to your teacher.

17. Any time chemicals, heat, or glassware are used, students will wear safety goggles. NO EXCEPTIONS TO THIS RULE!
