Listed below are some common special education-related questions that assist parents:
New & Returning Students
I highly encourage parents to attend the district open house on Thursday, August 21, 2025, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. so we can discuss the upcoming school year. Families unable to attend the open house can contact me anytime to meet before school. The best way to reach me is via phone at 585-2149 or e-mail at egillespie@morris.k12.mn.us.
Resource Room Classes/Time in Resource Room
The time a student spends in the resource room will be based on the child's Individualized Education Plan (IEP). This amount of time may increase or decrease during the school year to best meet the child's needs. If you have questions about the amount of time your child spends in the resource room, don't hesitate to contact me at any time.
IEP Meetings/Re-Evaluations
Parents will have at least one IEP meeting for their child during the academic school year, but the IEP team can meet at any time if necessary.
At the IEP meeting, the team will discuss the child's current classroom performance, district/standardized test results, classroom adaptations and modifications, transition, assistive technology, and review the IEP.
Every three years, a re-evaluation is required by law. During the re-evaluation, the school district will consider the results of intellectual, academic, observation, and transition, as well as various checklists and interviews with staff, parents, and the student.
Procedural Safeguards (Parent Rights)
Parents will be given a copy of Procedural Safeguards (Parent Rights) created by the Minnesota Department of Education at every IEP meeting. Please let me know if you want a copy of this document.
Progress Reports
Progress will be reported through 3 written progress reports and 1 annual IEP meeting; progress will be shared when non-disabled peers receive reports at the end of the quarter.
Classroom Policies
Classroom policies will be discussed with parents at the open house, and they will be discussed extensively at the beginning of the school year.
