Complete the Graphic Organizer Attribute Web for your character (Kino, Juana, the doctor, the priest, Juan Tomas, or the pearl buyers). Write word-for-word text for your examples.
Next, infer what your character THINKS and FEELS based on these quotes.
To exceed this standard, you must argue that these quotes effectively support your inferences. Connect the author's words to your conclusions, explaining how the text supports your understanding of your character.
Example:
TEXT: Lord Montague tells Benvolio, "Away from light steals home my heavy son and private in his chamber pens himself, Shuts up his windows, locks fair daylight out, and makes himself an artificial night."
INFERENCE: Romeo feels depressed.
ARGUMENT: Romeo's father tells Benvolio that Romeo is "heavy," which means that he is "sad and moody." The fact that he goes into his room and sits in the dark during the day and roams around only at night shows that Romeo is feeling depressed because light is associated with health and happiness and darkness with danger and emptiness. Romeo goes out of his way to create darkness even during daylight hours, showing that he is overcome with sadness.
Nonexample:
TEXT: Lord Montague tells Benvolio, "Away from light steals home my heavy son and private in his chamber pens himself, Shuts up his windows, locks fair daylight out, and makes himself an artificial night."
INFERENCE: Romeo feels depressed.
ARGUMENT: Romeo locks himself in his room during daytime, which shows he's depressed.
