Chemical dependency is still very much an issue among youth today, starting as early as middle school. Yet many of us struggle with when and how to have a conversation with our teenagers about this topic. We will present strategies for discussing with your teen the impact chemicals can have on their ability to grow and learn, as well as their relationship with their family and peers.

The FBI has seen a significant increase in sextortion activity that is affecting thousands of U.S. children – and it only takes one click for a child to become a victim. We will discuss some FBI cases in Minnesota, based on a child’s social media activity and presence on the Internet. Parents need to be aware of the risks and learn how to help children safely navigate today’s technology, as well as new legislative measures being enacted to keep kids safe.

The "Not So Obvious" Lessons of Middle School

Dr. Steven Kahn

Parenting well during the Middle School years requires deep understanding and compassion. Their bodies and attitudes are changing fast and their circumstances are challenging in many ways. It is no wonder that they routinely act in ways that try our patience. The focus of this presentation will be on strategies to stay closely connected to our 6th, 7th and 8th graders as they do the work of early adolescence. How we parent during Middle School sets the stage for how adolescence will evolve.
