ANZAC Day

Primary source galleries on First World War themes

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Anzac landings at Gallipoli in April 1915. Ultimately this short campaign was a failure for the Allies, as pointless as it was bloody. But despite this it also had a profound impact on the collective identities of New Zealand, Australia and Turkey.

To cater for the growing demand and interest in Gallipoli and the First World War, we have published a number of related primary source galleries suitable for schools.

Currently the Anzac gallery features unique items, including newspaper cuttings, cartoons and paintings, relating to the New Zealand Anzac experience.

Hot off the press is the new Gallipoli gallery. This comprises primary sources ranging from diary excerpts, hand drawn maps, to photographs featuring troops from both sides.

Over the coming months we will be publishing more war themed galleries of primary sources - all drawn from the extensive collections of the Alexander Turnbull Library.

MoE First World War inquiry guides and resource packs

The first in the series of Ministry of Education’s First World War inquiry guides and resource packs for Years 1-13 have been released. A sneak preview of the first guides can be foundhere.

These will be progressively made available throughout 2015.

All inquiry guides and resources will become available on a new TKI site, to be launched towards the end of February 2015. All schools will be notified once content has been loaded onto the site.

Teachers can use the inquiry guides and resource packs to help students to investigate how events and experiences of the First World War are relevant now and into the future, and to develop and relate their inquiries to their own lives, communities and aspirations.

The inquiry guides in English are aligned with the New Zealand Curriculum while the resource packs in Māori are aligned with Te Marautanga o Aotearoa.

This collaborative project included significant contributions from Services to Schools, and the Ministry of Culture and Heritage.
