One of the great advantages of a vinyl fence is the low maintenance costs involved. They’re extremely weather resistant and, unlike wood, vinyl won’t ever rot, splinter, warp or crack. Vinyl fences are attractive, insect-proof, and never need to be painted or weather-sealed.
A vinyl fence does need a little maintenance however in order to keep it looking and performing at its best.
Clean The Vinyl Fence Regularly- Cleaning vinyl fences is easy, just hosing it down alone will usually do the trick, but if you need something more, try a bit of non-abrasive household detergent mixed with water. Just gently sponge away the grime.
Tackle Tough Stains- Hard water buildup from sprinklers, algae, mildew, rubber marks from lawn mower, etc. sometimes require a little more manpower to get rid of. A pressure washer will often be all that is needed for these tougher stains but there are many products on the market to help get rid of these too. Check your local hardware store for details.
Smart Tip: Never use any type of abrasive cleanser or scouring pad on vinyl fencing. Abrasives can scratch and dull the glossy sheen of vinyl.
Check the Structure- To ensure your vinyl fence lasts as long as possible, it's important to conduct an up-close-and-personal inspection at least once a year. Walk both sides of your fence and check for severely leaning or loose posts, broken panels, missing/broken post caps, and sagging gates. Don’t overlook any potential future hazards such as overhanging limbs, overgrown trees or bushes pushing against the fence, or future wear on gates by repeatedly over-opening.
Smart Tip: Be careful when using a string trimmer near a vinyl fence. The fast-whipping string can easily damage vinyl fence parts. If a landscaper maintains your lawn, caution them to work carefully around the fence.
By keeping up with regular cleaning and making repairs as necessary, your vinyl fence will look good as new for years to come. For any questions about maintenance for your fence give us a call at 813-733-2000.
