Hi Students,

We were saddened to hear schools will be closed for the rest of the year but glad to hear that the stay at home efforts are working and the curve is flattening. We miss you and hope you are all doing well and we will continue to provide materials to support learning.

In this week’s packet you will find 4 sections:

  • Math
  • Grammar
  • Poetry
  • Research a culture
  • Reading - Read an hour each day from a book of your choice. Other options include: Article from Newsela, Newspaper, Audiobook or Podcast

Math

In math this week, we would like you to log on to google classroom and answer a few questions. In the weeks to come for math, we will be using google classroom more and the goal this week for google classroom is to log in, find the classwork and assignments. If you have trouble logging in to google classroom, please email Mrs. Fink so she can help you. In the packet, you will do some outdoor activities with patterns and measurements for a scavenger hunt. Also, please do IXL 20 minutes per day.

Grammar

Complete the worksheets to practice editing and working on grammar standards. Email Mr. Slostad if you have any questions.

Poetry - 3 things:

  1. It is National Poetry Month!!! Many of you know that Mr. Slostad teaches a poetry unit and we publish poetry books ending the unit with a poetry cafe. We will still be doing all of that! Mr. Slostad will be using Youtube to post short teaching videos (about 2/week) that will explain the poems you will be expected to teach each week (be patient as this is new for Mr. Slostad and he is sure it is going to be weird) Watch them as you can and use the supplied materials to help you. He will also have a scheduled time for each class to ask questions in a google hangout forum. As always, you can email, call or text if you have any questions. Look for the link to the first video to be shared on Tuesday and the second on Thursday.

  1. Methow Arts and KTRT have asked for students to read poems on the radio! If you are interested, read the included letter from Ashley. You will need to do a voice memo recording of you reading your poem and email it to depdon@gmail.com.
  2. Also included is the National Poetry Library Competition information. Every year students from 6th grade submit one poem at the end of the year and each year students have been selected to have their poems published in their anthology. Mr. Slostad will share more about this soon.

Research a Culture

Since we can’t travel, we should do a virtual travel project! You need to pick a culture/country and convince your family/friends/teachers that this is the next place in the world you should visit. You are a travel sales agent, how will you best sell this country? Is it the food, the sights, the festivals? Remember to include the Geopoem and travel itinerary. The cultural fair will be the week of May 4th.

We miss you!

YLTs,

Slostad and Fink
