February 13, 2017
This week is the final week before February Break. The mid-winter break brings lots of excitement to MDI with the basketball tournament and state championship meets in both swimming & diving and track & field. Good luck to all the teams (hopefully it stops snowing and we get all the meets and games in on time).
Unified Basketball Season
The team has been practicing hard and is ready to begin the second season of Unified Basketball. Please come and see these amazing students/athletes give it their all on and off the court. No admission to the game, but we will be accepting cash donations for Local Solutions at the door. Hope to see everyone there!! This year there are 48 Unified Teams with 23 teams in the North and 25 in the South. Here are the schedules for MDI, Ellsworth and Bucksport as well as the Unified Basketball rules. Maine Integrated Youth Health Survey
Message to Parents
This school year, students at Mt. Desert Island High School will be asked to take an anonymous health survey on February 15, 2017. The data from this survey is used at school, county, and state levels. It supports grant funding, assessment of student needs, and the design and evaluation of programs. You have the choice of asking that your child not take this survey. Your child will also have the option of not taking the survey.
Careers in Your Backyard
New Ventures Maine will be offering "Careers in Your Backyard." They are looking for any 9th grade girls interested in HCTC and the Jackson lab. The students will have an opportunity to explore the careers at Jackson Lab and the programs offered at HCTC. It will take place on Friday, Feb 17th. We will be offering a bus and space is limited. Please see Guidance for a permission slip and to sign up.

Weather Cancellations & Delays
Message from our Superintendent of Schools - Dr. Marc Gousse
The safety of our students and staff is an important responsibility and we take this into consideration when making the decision to cancel school, dismiss students early or delay the start of school.
After conferring with the town public works departments, local police departments, surrounding area schools and the latest weather forecast, a decision is made on whether to hold or cancel school.
Not everyone agrees with each storm day decision. As a parent, you have the ultimate decision. If we hold school and you are concerned with your youngster traveling, by all means keep her/him home. (Please call the high school at 288-5011 to excuse your child).
We will report cancellations, delays, and early releases with a School Messenger text/e-mail (parents/guardians must opt-in for this) and post cancellations on the main page of the district website (www.mdirss.org). Cancellations will also be reported on local television stations (WLBZ and WABI), several local radio stations, the MDIslander website (www.mdislander.com) and the Ellsworth American website (www.ellsworthamerican.com). (Note - MDI High School will also post all cancellations, delays, and early releases on our website (www.mdihs.net), our High School Facebook pages, and by Twitter (@MDIDeanBraun).
A 2-hour delay to the start of school will be used on stormy days when travel is expected to improve during the morning commute. If the 2-hour delay procedure is used, parents should plan on bus transportation picking up approximately 2 hours after their regular pick-up time. Breakfast will be available to students even with the 2-hour delay. The high school will begin classes at 10am.
MDIRSS/AOS 91 tries to limit early dismissals due to inclement weather or unique circumstances. With careful planning and the student’s welfare in mind, we will make every attempt to not dismiss school early. As the weather can be unpredictable, there may be exceptions where the weather will warrant early dismissal. Early dismissal times may be amended by the Superintendent of Schools on a case-by-case basis dependent upon the nature of the unanticipated event. (Note - the standard dismissal time for the high school is 11:30am)
