Grading System

A. Daily rehearsal grades

a. Student’s begin each rehearsal with four points

b. The following factors will reduce points

i. Less than acceptable participation

1. Socializing -2

2. Inattention - 2

ii. No music or pencil -2

iii. Class cut -4

iv. Less than acceptable posture -2

v. Possession or usage of gum, food, drink -2

vi. Tardy to class -1

vii. Disrespect to others -2

viii. ISC and OSS placement due to Choir infraction -2

B. Attendance is mandatory for all choir concerts. Concerts are our “exams” and when a student is not present, they miss the exam. It is not possible to make up this work.

a. Unexcused absences from the concert will result in a loss of 100 points

b. To be excused from a concert, the student must present a parent note or phone call prior to the event. No excuses are acceptable after the event.

c. An excused absence from a concert will result in the loss of 30 points for the quarter.

i. Students are required to schedule an appointment with Mr. Rock and Miss Sullivan to sing portions of the concert to achieve full credit.

d. Excuses accepted without deductions include

i. Illness-automatically excused ONLY if the student is absent the day of the concert.

ii. UNAVOIDABLE family events such as death in the family or wedding. (Events that can be scheduled at other times such as birthday celebrations are NOT EXCUSED.)

iii. Participation in another school activity, when pre-arranged by both advisors.

iv. Emergency occurrences or accident confirmed with the director at the earliest possible time.

e. The following examples are NOT excused:

i Transportation problems (Please see either Mr. Rock or Miss Sullivan prior to the concert if there is a transportation problem that you cannot fix.)

ii. Jobs/baby-sitting

iii. Observation of other school events

vi. Participation in NON-SCHOOL related sports or clubs such as baseball

v. Vacations without two weeks advance notice from parents.

f. Poor behavior and participation at the concert will result in a loss of points.

g. If you are suspended from school on the day of the concert, you are required to schedule a time with Mr. Rock or Miss Sullivan and sing the concert for them. You will only be able to receive 60 points towards your concert grade. It is the student’s responsibility to arrange a time to sing.

C. Music courses require evaluations of individual skills. Students will be given:

a. Worksheets and written assignments

b. Group vocal assessments

c. Individual vocal assessments

i. On some of our individual vocal assessments, we ask students who have a phones or an iPod that records, to use their personal devices to record their performance and email it to either Mr. Rock or Miss Sullivan. For those who do not have a device that will record, one is available at the school to use.

d. Attending a concert and writing a review

f. Practice logs and rehearsal reflections
