Reading

Your child will bring their reading book home every night. It is important that you read the current week's story together. Some of the stories are long, so you might want to take turns reading a page. The more time your child spends reading the stories the more fluent a reader they will become. Our goal for second grade is that each child will read at least 100 words per minute. I will be sending home notices periodically letting you know how your child is progressing towards that goal.

Every Friday your child will be tested over the story we have been studying. After you and your child read the story ask them some questions about it. Examples: Who were the main characters in the story? Where did the story take place? What was the problem in the story? How did it get resolved?

We will also be using the Accelerated Reader Program this year to encourage independent reading. Based upon benchmark testing I will set individual goals for the students. When a child achieves their goal they will receive an award. The link below helps you to connect to the AR program. This connection for parents will keep you up to date on the tests and reading levels of your child.
