"You have brains in you head.
You have feet in your shoes.
You can steer yourself, any direction you choose.
You're on your own and you are the one who'll decide where to go.."
Dr. Seuss' simple and yet superb view of our choices and our decisions written in his book, Oh! The Places You'll Go! has been in my "brains" since it was read to me as a child. As a teacher, my hope is that I can instill this precious and practical message into the "brains" of my students.
The places I chose to go in the field of education included attending Murray State University where I received my Bachelors of Science Degree in Education. After obtaining my degree, I chose to work at Massac County High School as a classroom instructional aide in the Life Skills class. This wonderful opportunity further developed my "brains" by helping me to understand that while some of us are faced with challenges that others are not, some of us are blessed with qualities that others cannot be taught!
My next decision was to attend Southern Illinois University where I was chosen to be a member of the Teaching Fellows program. This program allowed me to obtain my Masters Degree in Curriculum and Instruction while teaching in a third grade classroom at Unity Point School in Carbondale, Illinois. I began pursuing my Masters in Educational Administration and Leadership in August of 2015 through McKendree University and in May of 2017 I attained my Type 75 Administrative Certificate.
The 2009-2010 school year was my first year to be a teacher in the Massac Unit #1 School District. I taught Reading, Writing, and Math at Brookport Elementary School in the 4th and 5th grade. My role at Brookport Elementary for the 2010-2011 school year was as a reading teacher. I worked primarily as a reading interventionist and data coach for grades 5-6.
This year will be my fifteenth year teaching 1st grade at Metropolis Elementary School and I couldn't be more excited! I feel so blessed to be a member of the kind and warmhearted team of educators at MES.
This is the path I've chosen, with "my brains in my head and feet in my shoes", and my desire is to help students learn and develop so they can steer and decide for themselves the direction they will choose!
A few favorites of mine that my students and I may share!
