Vicente & Briones Schools- New Campus

Vicente Briones New Campus

What a journey! The MUSD Board of Education took action in April of 2012 to construct a new facility for Vicente Martinez High School and the Briones Independent Study Program. The first day of class was December 22, 2016.

This project was certainly not the kind of race you sprint, it was much more of the marathon variety. We experienced initial delays due to underground pipes that the Department of State Architecture determined to be too close to the original campus. We were forced to find a new location to build the campus. This obstacle was overcome when we moved the Facilities and Maintenance Departments to the back of our Adult School campus, clearing the path for what would be the new Vicente/Briones campus.

Once we had a new location we had a new hurdle. The new location was, at one point in our history, the site for the Alhambra Union High School. When that was demolished, a long time ago, the building was knocked into the basement and much of it was burned. When digging up the site for new construction, the impact of previous actions was revealed by larger than acceptable amounts of lead in the dirt. Truck loads of extra dirt had to be very carefully removed to ensure the health and safety of our neighbors and the community.

A wise owl felt we may we moving a bit too fast, literally. A palm tree on the site was home to a few owls. (Read more on the owl story here.) Eventually, the owls left the tree, the tree was taken down, and we began construction at a rapid pace. The foundation was poured and the rest is history!
