DECEMBER 2022

December News:

  • Report Cards: First trimester report cards will be sent home on Thursday, December 22nd. As a reminder, this new report card is in its pilot year. It is a standards-based report card, and marks will reflect a child’s growth and work towards proficiency in each standard. Depending on the grade level, the report card may have up to 75 standards being assessed throughout the year. Each area will not be assessed each trimester. Instead, areas may have an N/A this trimester, but will be assessed in either the 2nd or 3rd trimester. You may keep your copy of the report card, but sign the report card envelope and return it to your child’s classroom teacher.

  • Early Release: Students get out of school for the Holiday break on Friday, December 23rd. All elementary students are released at 11:15 a.m. on the 23rd. There will not be any Pre-School classes on December 23rd. Students will return to school on Tuesday, January 3rd 2023.

  • Snow and COLD: With the arrival of colder temperatures, we ask that children come to school prepared for all types of weather. We allow children to play in the snow (once we have some!) if they are properly dressed. They need to wear boots, snow pants, a jacket, and hats and mittens. The students go outside every day for some recess and fresh air. (unless it is below 15 degrees or pouring rain). It also would be a really good idea if you label your child’s clothing so that we can make sure lost hats, coats, and boots get returned to their owners!

  • Arrival: Another reminder that students enter the school building at the 8:20 a.m. bell. We are seeing students arrive very, very early and some arrive very, very late. Please do your best to get students here around the 8:20 a.m. time. We respectfully ask that adults dropping off late students NOT drive up the driveway, but use the drop and go on Bruce Road.

Because of our half day Pre-School programs, we have STS transportation arriving all hours of the day. We can’t have vehicles up in the upper parking lot blocking the STS bus lane. Thank you for your cooperation.

  • Adults Entering Building: Many thanks to family members who are following protocols and using the buzzer and speaker system to communicate with the main office. If you are waiting your turn to speak to Mrs. Philbrook through the speaker system, please do not try to enter the building along with others who have already been cleared to enter the building. We have to account for everyone in the building. Once you are buzzed in, please go directly to the main office, not down the hall to classrooms. Thank you for your cooperation!

  • Yes! Scholarship $ for Tutoring sessions: The NH Dept of Education will be taking submissions through December 31st from students across N.H. to receive money towards tutoring sessions. Every student who applies will receive $1,000 worth of academic tutoring from certified teachers, licensed speech therapists, occupational therapists and specialized instructors. See this link for more information. https://yeseducation.nh.gov/

  • Books Are Fun! Our school will be participating in the Books Are Fun program! We will be launching this next week, December 8th. Look for a treasure map and more information in next week’s Thursday folder.

  • Festive Fridays: Every Friday for the month of December, staff and students are encouraged to be “festive”. We are all pulling out our Holiday sweaters, reindeer headbands and Santa hats! Hope students can join in our festive fun!

  • Holiday Shop: The PTO sponsored Holiday Shop will take place on Saturday, December 17th from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. This shop is an opportunity for students to buy little gifts for family members and friends.

  • Share the Warmth: Thank you to all the families who have already donated winter clothing to our annual Share the Warmth clothing drive! Donations will be accepted through December 16th, and will be distributed to our Smyth Road children and other children in the Manchester community. We appreciate your generosity!

  • Thank you: Thanks to all of our Smyth Road families for all you do to support our school. I hope this Holiday season is filled with fun, health and happiness!

  • Photo Retake: Picture retake day is Tuesday, December 13th for students who were absent on the original day, or those who need their photo retaken. Order forms are available in the main office for those who need them. Students who need a retake need to simply return their original package to the photographer—they do NOT need a new form.

Students of the Month: We had another fun Road Runner Rally assembly in November. Many were recognized as students of the month because of their positive energy, great work ethic, and kind words and deeds. Here are the November students of the month:
