“Any book that helps a child to form a habit of reading, to make reading one of his deep and continuing needs, is good for him.”― Maya Angelou

3rd Annual Book Swap

Thank you to everyone who helped make our FALL book swap such a huge success! Over 800 books were donated by Beech families and friends. Swapping books was super fun thanks to our wonderful PTG and City Year. The library collaborated with them to have the book swap at literacy night and during library that week.

Borrowing policy:All students may borrow unlimited books per week. Kindergarten, First and Second grade students' books remain in their classrooms. Third through Fifth graders are allowed to take library books home for the week. All students start the year with one book and based on how responsible they are handling the book and returning it on time determines the number of books they may borrow weekly.

Mission

Reader

Choosing books:Primary students may choose any book from the primary section. This includes fiction, nonfiction and magazines. We teach and encourage students to use the "5 Finger Rule" to choose just right books for themselves. However, student choice is top consideration. Often, students choose a book for the illustrations, and or love of a favorite author.

Intermediate students (grades 3-5) may choose any reading material in the library. This includes fiction, nonfiction and

magazines as well as several genre sections such as Biography, Memoir, Poetry, Fantasy and Historical Fiction. Again,

students are taught and encouraged to choose books that are at their reading level, but are allowed to choose books not at

their reading level with the knowledge that they will share them with family and friends.

Beech St. School Library Mission: The B.S.S. Library strives to provide a welcoming and accessible center to all the resources and skills necessary for our students to be successful learners.

“It is the mission of Manchester School Library Media Specialists to empower and inspire all learners to reach their greatest potential in a global community.”

Gifts / Donations

The library welcomes gifts or donations of appropriate, in excellent condition, books and materials. . Any donated materials become the property of Beech St. School and may be disposed of as seen fit. Please understand that the same criteria for purchased materials applies to donated materials:The material is of a topic which falls within the scope of our collection, it is in excellent condition, it is timely, and the library does not already own duplicate materials.
