Maine South National Honor Society Tutoring Program
As a member of NHS, you are required to participate in our tutoring program. We provide a very important service to the students of Maine South, and you are the most important part of making this program a success.
This is how it works:
When your schedule is matched with a student in need of tutoring, you will receive an email from Mr. McArthur or one of the NHS officers.
You must respond to this email within two school days. If you are going to tutor, you also will contact the student to set up a time to meet. Then, email the officer who contacted you (cc Mr. McArthur, please!) to let us know when and where you will meet with the student.
After that, you will receive emails or phone calls from the NHS vice president who will check in with your progress.
You may tutor in the library or the cafeteria. If you are having trouble finding a suitable place to tutor, please let me or the officers know. If you choose the library, explain to the librarians on your first day of tutoring that you are an NHS tutor, and they should provide an appropriate place for you to sit.
Tutor the student once or twice a week for 20-45 minutes at a time, more if you are available.
Important: Ask the student to come prepared with something specific to work on so that the tutoring sessions are productive. Have an agenda.
Resist the temptation to do the work for the student. Let him/her figure it out with your guidance.
Inform the vice president or Mr McArthur right away if you run into difficulties (for example, you’re not familiar enough with the subject matter or the tutoree doesn’t show up).
The expected length of time you will tutor a person is about one semester. If the person still needs tutoring after this time, and you would rather not continue as tutor, please inform the vice president as soon as possible.
It is extremely important that you respond promptly to tutoring requests; students who are in-need of help are waiting, and we need to know whether or not to find other candidates!
