Rock Glaciers at Deboullie

Putnam and Putnam described five rock glaciers in Deboullie Public Reserved Lands in 2009 (Putnam, A. E., & Putnam, D. E. (2009). Inactive and relict rock glaciers of the Deboullie Lakes Ecological Reserve, northern Maine, USA. Journal of Quaternary Science, 24(7), 773-784). These glaciers are found below talus slopes in the area and maintain year-round ice below the slope. The glaciers host a biological community different than the surrounding area that are likely promoted by the ice beneath. Our research project seeks to describe these communities and explore the conditions that are likely contributing to their survival. This information will be used to help monitor changes in the communities due to the potential climate change in the region.

Our project is funded by the Maine Outdoor Heritage Fund.
