Position Description
The Cartography Specialist will support the Conservation Information Manager in creating maps, and integrating maps into publications for OSI’s Land, Stewardship, Conservation Capital, Parks and Policy and External Affairs Departments. The Cartography Specialist will be responsible for creating maps for internal staff, advisory committee and board presentations, the web, publications, external events and fundraising efforts under the direction of the Information Manager. The Cartography Specialist will be principally responsible for developing layouts and design to integrate maps into OSI publications and websites. H/she will also obtain and maintain GIS data as needed and assist in the maintenance of an internal dataset of protected lands.
Primary Roles and Responsibilities
• Produce maps, including illustrated maps and 3D visualizations, for presentations, site plans, and publications.
• Communicate information through the use of color, symbols, style, and other means that are easily accessible and visually appealing to diverse audiences.
• Assist in layout and design of electronic and hard copy documents, for presentations, press releases, annual reports, eblasts, and newsletters, and as otherwise needed.
• Use desktop publishing packages to edit and formulate information.
• Adhere to mapping and data management practices established by Conservation Information Manager.
Secondary Roles and Responsibilities
• Assist in the maintenance of data in a centralized geodatabase of OSI lands, conservation easements, and grant and loan projects.
• Create maps using only GIS for Land, CCP and External Affairs Departments
• Perform GIS analysis as needed in support of Conservation Information Manager.
• Support management of web-based map(s) on OSI website and annual reports.
Requirements
Technical Skills and Abilities
• Extensive knowledge of and experience with Adobe Illustrator and InDesign, with specific emphasis on editing and enhancing overall appearance of maps made in ArcGIS Desktop.
• Experience designing maps, graphics, illustrations and layouts for electronic and hard copy formats.
• Working knowledge of ESRI software ArcGIS 10.3 including Spatial Analyst, Model Builder and ArcGIS Online.
• Working knowledge of current trends and best practices in GIS; knowledge of and ability to utilize GIS resources available to GIS professionals.
• Demonstrated experience collaborating with other parties (internal and external) to obtain necessary data sources.
• High-level project management skills and experience and ability to determine solutions for multiple types of projects.
• Advanced understanding of and experience with image processing and cartographic principles.
General Skills and Abilities
• Excellent visual sense, and verbal and written communication skills.
• Outstanding attention to detail, organization, diligence and commitment to excellence.
• Ability to work on complex assignments and take initiative with little supervision.
• Highly collegial working style and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
Qualifications
• BS degree and/or certification in related field and 2-4 years related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Physical Requirements
• Frequently sits for long periods of time.
• Frequently speaks, reads, writes and uses a computer keyboard.
• May require occasional standing, walking, lifting, stooping, and bending.
