Kyle Winslow of East Machias graduated from UMM in 2007 with a degree in Environmental Studies. Kyle is the hatchery manager at Downeast Salmon Federation.Tell us a little bit about what you are doing now:I am currently managing the Downeast Salmon Federation’s two Atlantic salmon hatcheries. I also support many other projects the DSF has going on. Our big project, and my main focus, is a multi-year research project on the East Machias River using salmon rearing techniques that were successful in restoring Atlantic salmon the River Tyne in Scotland. We hope to use these techniques to restore Atlantic salmon populations on the East Machias River, and on other rivers with endangered populations of salmon in the future. My fiance and I have recently welcomed our beautiful little girl, Lily, to the world as well. What is the most valuable thing you learned while at UMM?The most valuable thing I learned from UMM was that I do not have even close to all the answers to problems that arise, but that I do have the ability to find the solutions.
Do you have any advice for current students at UMM?
Don’t be afraid to make big choices!
How did your time at UMM prepare you for what you are doing now?
It gave me the confidence to know that I was capable and able, which helped in applying for jobs, in interviews, and in the workplace.
How has UMM made a positive impact on your life?
I consider myself so incredibly fortunate to have the opportunity to work with many of my professors in a professional capacity following graduation. Having UMM’s faculty, staff and students, as a part of my life now is a very positive thing!
