WE CURRENTLY HAVE TWO OPEN POSITIONS AT HERRING GUT LEARNING CENTER.

MARINE SCIENCE AND AQUACULTURE EDUCATOR

Position Overview

This position teaches aquaculture and marine science programs, using experiential, hands-on learning methods to elementary and secondary school students, teachers, and the public. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Aquaculture and Marine Science Teacher is responsible for providing marine science education. The Aquaculture and Marine Science Teacher works cooperatively and effectively with Trustees, Program Committee members and staff to advance the Center’s profile in the schools and community.

Job Responsibilities

Teach aquaculture using experiential learning methods to alternative and traditional students primarily in grades 6-8 during the academic year.

Teach aquaculture and marine science experiential outreach programs to all ages on-site and in the field.

Educate the public about aquaculture and marine science through speaking engagements, visual presentations, field tours, and facility tours.

Evaluate and develop curriculum to align with the Maine Learning Results.

Oversee and evaluate students’ performance to ensure school, state and federal standards are met.

Implement student-run aquaculture enterprises based on a small business model

Assist with the operation and maintenance of classrooms, salt and freshwater hatcheries and aquaponic greenhouse.

Recruit new participants and nurture existing relationships by meeting regularly with students, teachers, school administrators, aquaculture industry members, and partnering organizations.

Assist HGLC staff in securing external funding through grant proposals to foundations, state and federal sources.

Work flexible hours including some evenings and weekends.

Qualifications and Candidate Profile

Academic concentration in and a minimum of one-year successful classroom experience teaching science to middle and high school students.

Knowledge of instructional approaches and teaching methods for a variety of age groups.

Highly organized with effective written and oral communication skills.

Must have problem-solving, decision-making, and creative thinking abilities.

Must be self-motivated, hard-working, and able to function independently with minimal supervision, plus demonstrate the ability to work effectively in a team environment.

Proficient with personal computers including word-processing, spreadsheet, and other academic software.

DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR

Supervisor: Executive Director

General Function: The Development Director engages individuals, corporate donors and foundations to support the HGLC through contributions, sponsorships, special projects, and fundraising events. This position supports the activities of the HGLC through increased revenue. The D.D. develops and facilitates the proposal process, including budget and revenue projections, proposal writing, contract negotiations, and presentations. In addition, this position is directly involved in planning and implementing special events. This position works under the direct supervision of and reports to the Executive Director.

Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree in business, sales and marketing or other related discipline and at least three years prior related experience. Demonstrated successful fundraising and grant writing experience. The Development Director must possess the ability to cold call individuals, foundations, and companies, present organized proposals in a one-on-one and group setting, and follow through on requests necessary to close the deal. This position requires the ability to communicate orally and in written form effectively with internal and external customers. Must be a proper role model and able to relate and communicate well with children (students) and adults. The Development Director will need the ability to travel, in and out of state, as necessary.

Job Functions:

Identify and pursue new fundraising opportunities for HGLC through individual contributions, sponsorships, foundation and government grants, corporations and special projects by visiting potential and existing supporters. This position requires direct contact with people of all levels both internal and external.

Help manage the ED’s development oriented travel schedule.

Foster personal relationships with the organization’s major donors.

Formulate fundraising proposals under the direction of the Executive Director.

Prepare correspondence/mailings for fundraisers: letters, flyers, return envelopes, invitations, brochures, “thank you” cards, etc.

Understand, interpret, and articulate the mission of HGLC.

Develop promotional materials to establish and maintain an image consistent with HGLC mission throughout events.

Coordinate with marketing function.

Assist ED and accounting function with formulating annual Development Plan.

Support broad organizational involvement in fundraising efforts, including Board of Trustees.

Track and report the status of all proposal components to the ED.

Respond to donors’ needs and follow through on all aspects of request, both written and verbal.

Make presentations to various groups resulting in increased revenue.

Continuously develop personal knowledge and growth by identifying developmental needs and participating in appropriate trainings and activities.

Manage the fund raising/development database and make recommendations regarding upgrades as necessary.

Special Fundraising Events

Plan, manage, and implement successful strategies for all special fundraising events. This will include such tasks as recruiting participants, selling tickets, and soliciting sponsorships, as well as handling the logistics of each event

Track/maintain Profit and Loss Statements for each event to insure each meets/exceeds budget expectations.

Coordinate volunteers to assist with preparing mailings (stuffing, sealing, labeling, etc.) and to assist with the events (registration, set-up, take-down, etc.).

Schedule special event committee meetings in conjunction with the ED.

Provide marketing material as requested by the ED.

Maintain accurate records pertaining to each fundraiser.

Maintain a professional relationship with all clientele and other staff members.

Other duties as requested by the ED.

End Results:

This position results in:
