MARINE RESOURCE SCIENTIST I
The Department of Marine Resources Division of Public Health is seeking a motivated, independent individual to fill a vacant Marine Resource Scientist I position in Boothbay Harbor.
BRIEF JOB DESCRIPTION: This position will work with the Growing Area Supervisor to complete scientific data collection and analysis responsible for classification of shellfish harvesting areas in along the western coast of Maine according to the State of Maine Regulations, the National Shellfish Sanitation Program, and the Food and Drug Administration. Specific duties include maintaining requirements for current shellfish area classifications, collection of seawater samples from the NH border to the Penobscot River by boat and land, analysis and data QAQC for all water quality data; management and emergency event response for rainfall, seasonal and wastewater treatment plant conditional areas, report writing and review. Duties will include operating small boats, weekly office duties, and other scientific work as needed. This position will require working closely with the area biologists, the general public, town and municipal officials, volunteers and other state and federal departments. Work is performed under limited supervision.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A Bachelors Degree in a scientific, technical, or engineering discipline, or equivalent in directly related work experience; and two (2) years of progressively responsible experience in the field of marine resource research and management.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Preference will be given to candidates with a master’s degree in marine/environmental science, hydrographic engineering, public health or other related field. Preference will also be given to those who demonstrate knowledge of coastal oceanography and associated environmental pollution issues, analytical skills, database and computer skills (preferably ACCESS and GIS). Small boat handling experience and excellent written and oral communication skills will be required.
