Executive Director
The Pemaquid Watershed Association, PWA, is a vibrant, non- profit, membership based, charitable conservation organization. For almost 50 years, it has been dedicated to conserving and protecting the natural resources and spectacular beauty of Maine's Pemaquid Peninsula through land and water stewardship and education.
Located in Damariscotta, the hub of the peninsula, this grass roots land trust encompasses and serves the towns of Damariscotta, Nobleboro, Waldoboro, Bristol, Bremen and South Bristol. These quaint towns and coastal villages have long and rich fresh and salt water fishing heritage as well as a wide range of career opportunities. There is a very strong school system from elementary to the world-renowned Lincoln Academy. In addition, the area offers many cultural and recreational options and provides numerous amenities to complement a variety of lifestyles. It's a great place to raise a family, work, play, shop and retire!
Position Description
Overall: Under direction of the Board of Directors (BOD), the Executive Director is responsible for the management and supervision of all program and service areas of the Pemaquid Watershed Association (PWA). The Executive Director is the primary public voice of the Association and is expected to develop business, donor and membership networks for the purpose of furthering the mission of the Association. Also, the Executive Director is responsible for the development of collaborative programs with other organizations. The Executive Director is appointed by the BOD and is the primary communicator of BOD approved policies, actions and decisions and is responsible for implementing BOD policies and decisions.
The duties of the Executive Director include but are not limited to the following:
Operations Management
The Executive Director is the chief operating officer of the Association and is responsible for all day-to-day operations in accordance with established policies and procedures, the Association's articles of incorporation and bylaws, and direction of the Board of Directors. Continually stay abreast of technical, social, economic, and regulatory issues relating to land and water stewardship, land acquisition, easement oversight and other conservation issues that may affect the Association. Promptly advise the Board of Directors of such matters that should be brought to its attention.
Human Capital
Manages all aspects of the Association’s full and part-time staff. Is responsible for the selection, supervision, performance review and training of employees. Oversees the organization’s volunteer program.
Planning
Creates for BOD review and approval a multi-year strategic plan and an annual implementation plan. Monitors progress of all plans; refines plans as needed and provides reports to the BOD on a regular schedule. Reviews Association policies and procedures and makes recommendations for changes and additions to the BOD.
Financial Planning
Oversees the Association’s financial controls that are consistent with nonprofit accounting standards; provides financial policy recommendations to the BOD and implements approved policies. Develops and maintains, in cooperation with the Finance Committee, the annual operating budget; maintains the financial records of the Association and, jointly with the Treasurer, produces monthly financial reports to the Board.
Development
Creates and implements, in cooperation with the Development Committee, an annual fund-raising plan; with BOD approval, develops and submits grant applications to appropriate foundations and other philanthropic organizations; manages planned giving programs; administers awarded grant documentation requirements; seeks land and/or easement donations; maintains a network of contacts within the charitable giving community; reports monthly on all development activity.
Membership Management
Creates and implements, in cooperation with the BOD, an annual membership development plan that focuses on recruitment of new members and the retention of existing and past members; utilize advanced database management techniques to identify, contact, and promote membership benefits to nonmembers, both resident and nonresident.
Community Relations
Provides pertinent informational presentations to numerous public and private groups; establish and maintain relationships with local and regional decision makers, business leaders, community leaders, and the media; with BOD approval, acts as the organizational spokesperson.
Volunteer Management
Develop various programs intended to attract and maintain a corps of volunteers; motivate existing and potential members to become more actively involved in the Association's key activities including: preserve stewardship, preserve maintenance, trail construction, easement monitoring, educational programs, fund raising and special events; recruit volunteers to assist in staffing the Association's office.
Board Relations
Develops and maintains a successful working relationship with the BOD, as a whole and individually; maintain and facilitate communications with and between the BOD, committee chairs, Association members, and other constituencies. In conjunction with the BOD President, schedule and develop all meeting agendas, attend, and facilitate all BOD meetings and retreats; provide a monthly Executive Director's report, provide a report and presentation on the state of the Association at the Annual Meeting. Serves as an ex-officio member of all committees and attend such meetings as required.
Administration and Supervision
Provides direction and support for all administrative functions of the organization; maintains pertinent records and files; supervises full and part-time staff; sets staff performance goals and completes performance evaluations annually or as needed.
Qualifications
Education – Minimum of a four-year college degree from an accredited college or university. A degree in the environmental sciences or related field; and/or masters degree or higher is preferred.
Experience – Minimum of 2 years of progressively responsible experience in organizational management, administration, program development, in a public or private organization. (Years of relevant experience may be substituted for education)
Successful candidates should have knowledge of organization management and financial management; be familiar with data base programs, Quick Books, Excel, MS Word; be familiar and have experience with grant writing; have the necessary skills to successfully utilize social media; be comfortable with some public speaking and conducting public meetings; is competent with writing reports, newsletter articles, press releases and other similar forms of correspondence.
