Two Marine GIS Mapping Internships, Summer 2017

The University of Maine at Machias GIS Laboratory and Service Center is hiring two interns for summer 2017 to work on initiatives funded by NASA’s Maine Space Grant Consortium and the Maine Coastal Program. The projects involve identifying and addressing mapping needs of shellfish managers, buyers, and harvesters related to shellfishing closures due to pollution and/or harmful algal blooms. The internships will run from June 5 through August 18, 2017 with possible part-time extensions through December 2017. Most work will be done on-site at the UMM GIS Laboratory, with some travel throughout the State of Maine required. Summer interns will be expected to work 25 to 30 hours per week, hourly pay rate determined by student pay grades, but will be around $9.00 per hour.

Fisheries Social Science & Mapping Internship

Duties:

• Compile contact list of shellfish stakeholders (e.g. DMR staff, fisheries associations and organizations, shellfish commissions, etc.)
• Develop survey, get IRB approval of protocol, deploy survey & conduct preliminary analysis for interactive mapping needs for shellfish managers
• Develop visualization techniques for prototype analysis and map products, create draft support and training materials

Qualifications:

• At least one year of college-level coursework in GIS (required)
• At least one year of social science coursework (anthropology, sociology, economics, social psychology or related field (required)
• Familiarity with shellfisheries of the Maine coast (preferred)
• Excellent written and oral communication skills (required)
• Experience with web-based mapping (preferred)
• Experience with design, deployment, and analysis of qualitative and quantitative surveys and interviews (preferred)
• Valid driver’s license and clean driving record (required)

Fisheries Mapping & Remote Sensing Internship

Duties:

• Develop prototype models for downscaling and integrating hyperspectral, multispectral, and sampling data for use by shellfish managers, buyers and harvesters
• Translate closure descriptions from the Maine Department of Marine Resources into spatial data for use in online maps
• Develop prototype online, interactive GIS mapping systems for use by shellfish managers, buyers and harvesters for closures related to rainfall and harmful algal blooms currently provided in PDF format.

Qualifications:

• At least one year of college-level coursework in GIS, including significant raster analysis and model building (required)
• Coursework in remote sensing and image analysis, including use of ArcGIS Spatial Analyst image processing tools and/or Global Mapper (preferred)
• Experience in processing and analysis of multispectral and/or hyperspectral imagery (preferred)
• Excellent written and oral communication skills (required)
• Familiarity with shellfisheries of the Maine coast (preferred)
• Experience with web-based mapping (preferred)
• Valid driver’s license and clean driving record (required)
