The project is a SEANET industry/university partnership that will give a University of Maine student (INCLUDES UMM) an opportunity to gain work experience on a shellfish farm while also completing the requirements for their undergraduate capstone research project. The intern will assist Mook Sea Farm employees with the day to day operations in the oyster hatchery and/or in the field as well as conducting independent research. The research project involves camera deployment, monitoring and data analysis of video recordings documenting the presence and behavior of fish around aquaculture oyster cages. The student will deploy GoPro cameras on oyster cages as well as at a control site adjacent to the farm to document the behavior and association between fish and the cages. Techniques for this kind of work that were developed by NOAA Fisheries for use in Long Island Sound will be adapted to conditions in the Damariscotta River and to the activities carried out as part of the ongoing oyster grow out operations. Video data will be analyzed according to the protocols developed by NOAA Fisheries staff using Observer XT video processing software. Results from this video deployment will be summarized in a final report, presented as a poster, to fulfil the requirements of an undergraduate capstone project. It is anticipated that this report will include a consideration of the role of fish habitat and a quantitative analysis of fish interactions with shellfish aquaculture.
The project will be done with guidance from Dr. Richard Langton, who is a member of the NOAA Fisheries team but based at the Darling Marine Center. Dr. Meredith White, the Research Director at Mook Sea Farm, will also serve as an onsite supervisor and mentor. Mook Sea Farm is located a short distance up the Damariscotta River from the Darling Center.Students interested in this position should contact Rich Langton at richard.langton@maine.edu.
