Hello,
I am currently involved in a number of projects related to environmental politics and management, rural change and sustainability, the definition and dynamics of the rural-urban interface, and wine, beer, and cider geographies. For the latter, I am developing an encompassing conceptualization that encapsulates inquiry related to the environmental, economic, and sociocultural implications of fermentation in rural and urban places – or, especially, those interesting places in between. Related to this endeavor, I am recruiting a PhD (or highly-driven Masters) student to work with me to develop one or more of these fermentation geographies, or what I like to call “fermented landscapes.” Please read below for more information about Texas State University, our compensation packages, and my research interests. Please contact me directly (cchiner@txstate.edu) if you would like to know more.
Best,
Colleen

Department of Geography
Texas State University
The Department of Geography at Texas State University (http://www.geo.txstate.edu) is seeking highly motivated Master’s and Doctoral degree seeking applicants for the 2016-2017 academic year. Texas State is an emerging research institution and the Department of Geography possesses a vibrant, diverse, and growing faculty with specialties broadly encompassing human-environment interactions, environment and water resources research, GIScience and geospatial technologies, and geographic education. The department has on-campus affiliations with the Meadows Center for Water and the Environment, the Grosvenor Center for Geographic Education, and the Texas Alliance for Geographic Education, as well as a history of federally-funded research involving agencies such as NASA, NSF and EPA. We offer a variety of degrees through our graduate programs in geography, including Master of Science (M.S.) degree, Master of Applied Geography (M.A.G.) degree (with concentrations in Resources and Environment Studies, Geography Education, Geography Information Science, and General Geography), Ph.D. in Geography,Ph.D. in Geographic Education, and Ph.D. in Geographic Information Science.
In particular, the department is seeking students with a background or interest in land and environmental management as related to fermentation (e.g. wine, beer, and cider geographies). The study of such “fermented landscapes” is inclusive of the environmental politics and policy of fermentation, especially as related to landscape and social change, as well as the various agricultural practices and production processes pertaining to the making and selling of fermented beverages at a variety of scales in the United States and beyond. Please direct interest and inquiries regarding this research area to Dr. Colleen C. Hiner atcchiner@txstate.edu and/or visit http://cchiner.wp.txstate.edu for more information.
Funding opportunities exist for Graduate Assistantships at the Doctoral ($26,000 over 9 months, renewable up to a maximum of 4 years) and Master's ($13,097 over 9 months) levels. These assistantships also come with a waiver of out-of-state tuition for fall and spring semesters each year. Graduate Assistants also receive university student health benefits. In addition, the Department provides conference-related travel funding for students presenting at meetings (up to 2 conferences per year). Additional potential sources of funding such as full tuition waivers for Year One of a student's program, and doctoral and master's research fellowships, are competitively available through the Graduate College.
Applications for full funding considerations to start at fall 2016 semester are due byJanuary 15, 2016 for Ph.D. Programs and February 1, 2016 for Master’s Programs. Information about our Department can be found athttp://www.geo.txstatea.edu/. Detailed information about the graduate programs in Geography can be found at mycatalog.txstate.edu. More details regarding the application process may be found atwww.gradcollege.txstate.edu. Questions regarding the application and its process may be directed to the Department of Geography Graduate Staff Advisor, Allison Glass-Smith (am13@txstate.edu).------------------------------
