Assistive Software Applications

The ACL currently supports the following assistive technology software applications:

    • JAWS - screenreader (PC)

    • Kurzweil 3000 & 1000 - scan & read output / study skills system (PC and iMac)

    • Dragon Naturally Speaking - voice recognition (PC)

    • Zoomtext - screen magnification & speech output (PC)

    • Inspiration - idea mapping & brainstorming (PC)

    • Learning Ally Link - DAISY Playback (PC)

    • OpenBook - scan & read output system (PC)

    • BrainTrain - cognitive retraining (PC)

    • Notetaker hardware/software - Livescribe ECHO Smart Pen & NEW! Glean Audio Notetaker by Sonocent

    • Operating System Solutions for Windows and macOS operating systems - Built-in keyboard solutions and tools that provide basic level of access and may be suitable for some students, but may not offer the same level of functionality and customization as commercial or open-source assistive technology solutions.

In addition, the voice recognition program is available in private rooms in the HTC and in the Rosenberg Library. Please contact your DSPS Counselor for access to these rooms.

Adaptive Hardware & Furniture

The ACL also has different assistive technology hardware and environments for use by students with disabilities.

Mobile Devices

Students at City College use a variety of mobile computing devices, including the iPad and iPhone/iPod Touch platforms. The following includes a list of apps for the iPhone and iPad students have reported using in their academic curriculum.
