Homework Expectations
Third Grade students can expect to have nightly homework assignments Monday-Thursday throughout
the year. In addition, Reading Bingos, Reading Projects, and reviewing for tests will require students to
spend some time on Fridays and the weekends. Teachers expect students to turn in high quality work
with all their thinking shown and written in complete sentences.
Nightly Saxon Math
Students are assigned 30 Written Practice problems each night Monday-Thursday. **All work must be
shown to earn full credit. Students will keep their Saxon Textbooks at home throughout the year as a
resource to review lessons and to complete their homework. The Written Practice Homework will
correspond to the lesson taught in class that day. When a cumulative test falls on a Monday-Thursday
there will be no homework assigned that night. Students have their first test after the 10th lesson, and
then they are tested after every 5 lessons throughout the year.

Spalding
No written spelling homework is turned in. Third Grade students are responsible for studying their 30
Spalding spelling words at home each week. New spelling lists are introduced and worked with in class
one week prior to the testing week. Spelling Tests take place every Wednesday. All spelling lists can be
found and accessed on the documents tab. Some third grade students may also benefit from reviewing
spalding phonograms at home for reinforcement.
Reading (Nightly Accelerated Reader, Monthly Reading Bingo, Quarterly Reading Projects)
Nightly: Your child is expected to spend at least 20 minutes reading an AR book in their level each night. This assignment has a direct correlation with their AR grade through the quarter. When students are dedicated to reading
at home and follow through with their quizzes in the classroom they have the greatest success in
reaching their AR points goal for the quarter.
Monthly: Each month (except when there is a reading project due) students are assigned a
Reading Bingo to complete. The Reading Bingo is a collection of comprehension and reflection
exercises. Students must choose and complete four of the bingo activities using the AR reading they have done during that month.
The best way to stay on track is to break it up and complete pieces of the reading bingo throughout the month rather than to wait until the end which can be more stressful. There are specific and detailed directions in the Reading Bingo Packet.
Quarterly: Students will be assigned one long-term reading project per quarter. The purpose of
reading projects is to challenge students to demonstrate deeper comprehension of a text that they
have read and to provide them with opportunities to practice presentation skills in front of the class.
Reading projects are a reflection of a student's best third grade work, therefore they should each
reflect the quality and creativity of someone who worked hard and spent time on the project.
