This semester course is designed to introduce students to the features and interfaces of Garage Band, Secret Composer, and Avid Recording Studio. Students will learn to compose and produce their own music. With the use of Apple computers outfitted with recording and composition software and MIDI keyboards, students will be able to arrange and compose songs, edit and mix tracks, add effects, create a virtual backing band, and create a podcast of performance complete with narration, music, sound effects and artwork. This course is appropriate for the music enthusiast through practicing musicians who wish to create their own music without having formal music composition training. Students will explore different musical styles from popular music genres and examine contributions of bands and artists on recording and composition techniques. By the end of this course, students will have a portfolio of music selections composed and arranged by themselves and recordings of finished pieces.
