Phase 2 Distribution Improvement Project
Lusted Water District plans to replace a 1-mile section of water distribution main on Powell Valley & Roork Roads between 282nd & 302nd Ave. in the late summer and fall of 2024. This construction project will close segments of Powell Valley and Road Roads to thru-traffic for approximately 30 days (per segment). Local traffic and driveway access will be maintained through the construction corridor. Other travelers will be asked to detour around the project site.
The existing main was likely constructed "around the 1940s"--although we don't have records of its installation. Even at the time it was constructed with lower quality and thinner-wall steel pipe rather than the higher quality cast iron pipe that was common at the time. This steel pipe has not aged well--the joint couplers are severely corroded and we find corrosion holes in the side of the pipe on a regular basis. For several decades this water main has been springing leaks and requiring frequent repairs. Its day has come to be replaced!
Lusted Water District intends to replace this 4-inch corroded water main, that has almost no fire hydrants (only 1, in 1 mile) and very low "fire flow capacity" with a new 10-inch high density polyethylene (HDPE) water main that is impervious to future corrosion and is both leak and earthquake resistant. The new main will feature 10 fire hydrants--allowing our customer's homes to meet modern residential fire code.
