Two Week Look Ahead

Two Week Look Ahead - October 6, 2017

Good afternoon. We have a couple of busy weeks coming up with PSATs, Homecoming, Senior Nights, and the Opioid Awareness Night at LMHS. Hopefully, you will find the time to support some of these school and community events.

We are always looking for better ways of communicating and I understand that being inundated with email after email from various people from LHS can be somewhat overwhelming and frustrating. Therefore, I have enlisted the help of the Knightly News (our school news club) to send out future newsletters. The thought is that students in the club would work with their club advisor, administration teachers, and other club and class advisors to put together a more user-friendly and attractive way of communicating information. My thoughts are that this will happen in the near future.

This weekend is Columbus Day weekend, which means that schools are closed on Monday, October 9. Schools are also closed on Tuesday, October 10 due to a professional development day for school personnel. Hopefully, you will take advantage of the long weekend and enjoy some down time with friends and family.

When we return from the long weekend, we will continue Spirit Week. Spirit Week culminates with the Homecoming Rally on Friday, October 13 at about 1:30 pm. The schedule for Homecoming events is as follows: Homecoming Parade begins at noon on Saturday, October 14 from the Turkey Hill Elementary School. The end of the parade route is changing to allow public access to view the floats. Instead of going into the student parking lot, the floats will turn into the main entrance to LMHS on Mass. Ave and the floats will park in the bus loop. The public will be able to view the floats for free and then walk down to the turf field to pay for admission into the game. The football team plays after the parade at 2:00 pm against Ayer-Shirley. Go Blue Knights!

Following the Homecoming football game, we will have our Homecoming Dance. The theme is: Homecoming Masquerade Ball, A Knight in Disguise. Tickets are $5 in advance and $7 at the door and will be sold during lunches or students can see one 9th grade advisors, Mr. Cohen and Mrs. Yourk.

On Sunday, October 15 the Lunenburg PTO will be putting on the Miles for Myles Run/Walk/Ride. The bike ride starts at 11:00 am, followed by the 1 mile fun run at noon, and the 5K at 12:30 pm. The school with the most participation will receive $1000 to go toward a guest speaker or a need in the building. Please check the box: LHS!!!

PSATs will be administered on Wednesday, October 11 for students in grades 10 and 11 who signed up. Many 9th grade students will be participating in the Baseline Concussion Testing during the course of the day. Many 12th grade students are planning college visits for this day, as well. Students visiting colleges must have their visitation forms signed and returned to the guidance office on Thursday, October 12.

The Yearbook would appreciate getting pictures from parents, students and the community. Download this free app (Yearbook Snap) to send in pictures from events, after school, sports or any moment you would like to capture. The pictures get sent directly to our Yearbook online design program. Click on the pdf attachment for more information. yearbook snap app (1).pdf

The Genders & Sexualities Alliance (GSA), formerly known as Gay Straight Alliance is up and running! GSA helps to provide a safe place for students to meet, support each other, talk about issues related to sexual orientation and gender identity and expression, and work to end homophobia and transphobia. All high school students, no matter their orientation (Lesbian, Gay, Bi-Sexual, Transgender, Queer, Questioning, and Straight) are welcome to attend. GSA meets after school on Thursdays in Ms. Ackerman’s room!

The Lunenburg Resources for Opioid Awareness and Recovery Task Force “ROAR” is coming to the Lunenburg Middle High School auditorium on Tuesday, October 24 from 6:00 – 8:30 pm. There will be a panel that will include: a parent of a child who died from an overdose, Lunenburg young adults in long term recovery, Mike Duggan (founder of Wicked Sober), Lunenburg Police and Fire officers, and Brian O’Connor (Addiction Specialist from Middlesex Recovery.) Following the panel discussion, the film, “If Only”, created by James Wahlberg and the Mark Wahlberg Youth Foundation, will be presented. The feedback I have heard on the film has been excellent. This program is really targeted for high school age students through adulthood.

Winter sports sign up night for grades 9-12 will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 1 @ 6pm in the MS project room. Please help us get the winter season off to a great start by signing up for winter sports by Nov 1. Alpine Ski, Basketball, Ice Hockey, and Indoor Track will be offered for boys and girls. Forms for all winter sports will be available on the school web site starting on Oct 15th.

Sophomore class dues are now $15. There is a representative for each advisory who will collect money. Please get your money in soon if you haven't paid yet. The meeting with your class advisors that had originally been scheduled during advisory will be rescheduled as a short after-school meeting once Homecoming activities end. Please listen for an announcement. Thank you to all the students and parents who have been helping us build our float! There is one more week to go - come out and join us!
