Two Week Look Ahead

Two Week Look Ahead - February 28, 2020

I hope everybody enjoyed their February vacation. I wish that everyone was able to a little time to sit and relax. We are in the middle of third quarter and LHS is a hub of activity.

There are a few things I wanted to bring your attention to, over the next couple of weeks.

Monday, March 9, will begin the NEASC visit for Lunenburg High School. NEASC is the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. NEASC is an independent, voluntary, nonprofit membership organization which connects and serves over 1500 public, independent, and international schools in the U.S. and worldwide. NEASC is an advocate of educational quality and its ongoing improvement; it's purposes are exclusively educational. NEASC Accreditation attests to a school's high quality and integrity.

STUCO:

Some of the Student Council will be traveling to the State Student Council Conference in Hyannis On March 4th, 5th, and 6th. There will be over 1200 high school students there improving on their leadership skills and sharing ideas. Our very own Kyle Weiss will be running for the State Vice President seat. "Vote Weiss for Vice" will be part of our theme for the week. Some of our council will be supporting/ fundraising for the Special Olympics by doing the Polar Plunge....Diving into the freezing cold ocean just for the fun of it! Good Luck to Kyle and the rest of the council attending the conference.

Horticulture:

The Horticulture class is looking forward to visiting the Boston Flower Show on March 12. This is an annual tradition that they hope to continue. If you'd like to join them for a cost of $40, please email Dawn Gearin at dgearin@lunenburgschools.net asap for details.

Music Department:

Hello LHS Families! It is almost spring and almost time to choose classes for next year. We are asking students in grades 9-12 to complete a short anonymous survey asking what they have already taken for music courses and what they might like to take in the future to meet their Unified Arts requirement for graduation. We would like student feedback to begin planning the music offerings in the next LHS Program of Studies. Please remind your student to take the quick survey which was sent to student email accounts on Wednesday evening. Thank you!

Congratulations to all the High School Jazz Band members on a great performance on Thursday! Good luck to them as they head to Algonquin Regional on March 11th for competition in the Massachusetts Association of Jazz Educators festival.

Guidance:

Dual Enrollment- Representatives from Fitchburg State University and Mount Wachusett Community College will be in the school counseling office on Tuesday, March 3rd at 9:00 to talk with sophomores or juniors who are interested in learning more about or applying to a Dual Enrollment program. Interested student’s should see their school counselor to receive a pass allowing them to attend prior to Tuesday’s meeting.

Junior Seminar Updates – All Juniors should have attended at least one seminar as of February 28th. If a junior has yet to attend you are strongly encouraged to do so. The schedule was email to your school email, it is available in the Junior Google classroom, and posted outside of the school counseling office. Please see your school counselor if you need additional information.

Foreign Language:

Many Spanish students created Vejigante masks in celebration of Carnaval. The masks reflect the culture of Puerto Rico and are believed to attract “good vibes”. Students watched short videos, read an article and listened to two songs celebrating Carnaval as well as life. Students compared Carnaval in several Spanish speaking countries and learned about these countries culture, defined as products, practices and perspectives. The masks were hung around the school with the message “La vida es Carnaval” – Life is a carnival.

LHS is moving forward with The Seal of Biliteracy. The Seal of Biliteracy is a Recognition or certification of an individual’s language proficiency in 2 or more languages. For more information please go to: www.sealofbiliteracy.org
