History of Lunenburg High School

Lunenburg High School has been in existence since September 1895.  The school was created in response to a May 26, 1894 law that required towns without high schools to pay the tuition of any students attending school in other towns.  Lunenburg received so many requests for tuition reimbursement that the town decided it would be less expensive to build a high school of its own.  The first class graduated from Lunenburg High School in 1898.

Lunenburg High School is a comprehensive public high school accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC). The current high school is housed within the new Lunenburg Middle/High School that opened in 2016. The middle/high school is within walking distance of the center of town and is located on a campus that contains the Turkey Hill Elementary School, town library, teen center, and school offices located at the Thomas C. Passios building. The class of 2017 was the first class to graduate from the new high school.

The previous high school building was built in 1957. The class of 2016 was the final class to graduate from this Lunenburg High School building. The building closed in June 2016 and was demolished over the summer to make room for fields and parking at the new school.
