COURSE PHILOSOPHY & GOALS

ART is so many things. It's an idea, a means of observation, a pouring out of the heart, a story of humanity, a set of skills, an ability to find meaning in the ordinary- it's an entire world of its own. It is my goal as an art teacher to guide students as they explore ART in its many facets. 

For an artist, to communicate, design, and create effectively, honing craft (art skill) is essential. Deep knowledge and experience in composition, techniques, medium and creative processes is invaluable! My classes are centered on challenging students to intense growth in these areas through many activities, practices, strategies and projects. 

As a teacher it is my job to equip students and then to challenge students. Time is short, period. Classroom time is even shorter- it's my job to make the most of our learning time in class. 

I hold my students to a high level of expectations for growth and hard work, as I do myself. Be ready to draw, paint, clay, photograph, as well as discuss, research, and write about art. 

The only thing we don't do here is coloring pages. Nothing against coloring pages, but if this is your only expectation of art class, we need to shift this 

As a teacher, I chose teaching for the students and for the learning. My top priority is to provide a positive and safe place for students where they are built up and empowered to take on world-issues with the skills they have learned. 

I believe life is about MORE. People, not stuff. I hope my classroom is a place where that is evident. Thank you for considering joining art at Hutchinson Middle School!
