Baseball Coaches

Head Coach Jim Mellody: Coach Mellody ends 19th season as Head Coach in 2023. Prior to this, he served as a sub-varsity coach at LSHS since 2001. From 1997-2001 Coach Mellody Served as the Asst Varsity Coach at Warrensburg High School. Coach Mellody also coached as a student teacher at Olathe East High school in 1997 where they won the Kansas 6A State Championship.

As a player, Coach Mellody lettered for two years at Olathe South High School. His teams qualified for the state tournament both years, taking second in his junior season.

After high school, Coach Mellody had several offers to play in college, he choose to attend Avila University. Coach Mellody was the starting catcher his Freshman year, when a massive shoulder injury ended his playing career. He then transferred to Emporia State University to finish his degree where he graduated with a BSE in Social Studies Education. Coach Mellody also holds a Masters Degree from the University of Central Missouri in Secondary Administration.

Ending the 2023 season Coach Mellody has a 280-225 coaching record at the Varsity level. And a 29-19 post-season record. Some of his coaching highlights include:

Junior Varsity Coach Brad West:

Coach West is a graduate of Lees Summit High School. Coach West is also a coach for LSHS Softball. He decided not to play past high school and attended Indiana University, and finished his Masters in Education at the University of Central Missouri. 

 

Freshman Coach Kevin Pettit:

Coach Pettit enters his 11th year of teaching in the Lee’s Summit School District. He taught two years of elementary physical education and is completing his second year teaching health and physical education at LSHS. Coach Pettit graduated from Lee’s Summit North High School in 1998, where he lettered in baseball and football for three years. He played one season of college baseball for Truman State University, where he earned his Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science and his Master of Arts in Education. He was the assistant coach for the Truman State University Girl’s Softball team during the 2002-2003 season while completing his Masters degree.

Coach Pettit enters his 8th season coaching high school baseball, 7th season with the LSHS Baseball program as the JV assistant coach. Before joining the LSHS coaching staff, he coached at Lee’s Summit North High School for three years. Coach Pettit was also an assistant coach for the Post 189 Auxiliary American Legion Baseball team for two seasons. Coach Pettit has also coached girl’s fast pitch softball for 7 seasons and girl’s basketball for 5 seasons

Asst Varsity Coach Joe Rohlfing:

  He's a graduate of Lee's Summit West High School where he lettered three years in baseball and two years in basketball. Following high school, he attended Drury University where he played baseball for four years. Coach Rohlfing was a four-time All Great Lakes Valley Conference selection and was named the GLVC Freshman of the year during his first season. During his junior season, he led the nation in triples with 13 during the 2009 season at the NCAA Division 2 level. He was also a two-time Midwest Region Gold Glove winner at Drury. Coach Rohlfing graduated from Drury with majors in Physical Education, Secondary Education, and Exercise and Sports Science. He was inducted into the Drury University Athletics Hall of Fame in November, 2015. Coach Rohlfing recently completed his Masters Degree from William Woods University in Educational Administration.

       Coach Rohlfing spent the last four years at Harrisonville High School where he was the head varsity baseball coach for three of those. He led the Wildcats to a district Championship in 2015 where they defeated Pleasant Hill 16-2 in the title game. He also led Harrisonville to a 2nd place finish in the district tournament in 2016. Eight of coach Rohlfing's former players have gone on to play baseball at the collegiate level. Prior to being the head coach at Harrisonville, he was the "C" team coach for one year at Harrisonville. He was also the freshman coach at Lee's Summit High School for a year prior to Harrisonville. Coach Rohlfing coached baseball at Hillcrest High School in Springfield, MO during his student teaching. In addition to coaching baseball at LSHS, coach Rohlfing the Head Softball Coach at LSHS.   He teaches health and PE at BCMS
