Second Grade February Newsletter

Dear Parents,

Second graders are progressing nicely. You may notice your child reading more and showing you the new cursive letters we are using in class.

History

This month all second grade students will be studying about Civil Rights Heroes. We will learn about Susan B. Anthony, Eleanor Roosevelt, Mary McLeod Bethune, Jackie Robinson, Rosa Parks, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and Cesar Chavez. A history Review of Concepts will be stapled into all second grade planners. The test will be given at the end of the unit.

Science

For the month of February, second graders will study the human body. We will learn about teeth (canines, molars and incisors). We will also learn about the digestive and excretory systems in the body and their organs. Finally, at the end of the month, we will touch on the food pyramid, taking care of your body, and vitamins and minerals. The test will be given at the end of the unit.

Paraprofessionals

There are two exceptional paraprofessionals working in second grade. Miss Gehring will be helping with Mrs. McClarie's homeroom class and Mrs. Schrecengost will be helping with Mrs. Tomasetti's homeroom class. We are lucky to have these two talented teachers join us each day.

Birthdays

Birthday celebrations at school will not include food or beverages. Students will be recognized and celebrated on their birthday.

Lunch Program

LPCS participates in the Littleton Public Schools hot lunch program. Hot lunches will be served to students who order them beginning the first day of school. Students who do not order hot lunch must bring a lunch daily. Students will order hot lunch in homeroom at 8:00 each morning. If hot lunch is not ordered by 8:00 it must be ordered through the main office. Their hot lunch will be served at 11:50 that day. All students should bring a water bottle and snack each day.

Wednesday Folders

One way we plan to keep you informed is through the Wednesday Folder. It will contain student work and important information from both the classroom and the school. We would like to encourage all parents to take an active role in their child's education by reviewing your child's work with them. Please read the folder contents and send the empty folder back with your child. Wednesday Folders will go home every Wednesday. Please read the folders contents and send the empty folder back with your child the following day.

Homework Calendars, Infinite Campus and Web Pages

Although homework assignments will be kept to a minimum, your child will receive a homework calendar/planner during the first few days of school. Students are taught to write down important test dates, special projects, makeup work, and assignments given in class. Your job as a parent is to sign the calendar daily, even when your child has no homework (this ensures you are still checking the calendar). Homework calendars/planners help students stay organized and keep parents informed.

To check on your child's academic progress, you can use Infinite Campus. This is a computer program which contains your child's current grades, assignments and missing work. Infinite Campus can be accessed from any computer with a personal password given by the front office. If you do not have access to the internet, the school provides a computer for your use. Finally, parents can check each teacher's web page for homework assignments and missing work. Once a month, we will post our class newsletter. It will contain the months curriculum, important classroom information, and news about upcoming field trips or events.

Recommended Reading and Math Facts Practice

Reading and math are very important parts of our curriculum. Second grade will be participating in the Accelerated Reader program. AR is a reading program where students read books and take tests on the computer. The books students read must be in their reading level. The students must earn a 80% on their computer test to get credit for each individual book. This is a school wide reading program. Encourage your child to read 20 minutes per day. Also, math fact practice using addition, subtraction and multiplication flashcards will enhance your child's performance in math class.

We are looking forward to a challenging and exciting year. If you have any questions or concerns, you are welcome to communicate by email.
