The Importance of AR Progress
The Accelerated Reader program is one of many measures we use to monitor and grow students’ reading levels.. If your child attended SBE in 2nd grade, he/she participated in the program for the entire 2nd grade school year. In 3rd grade, participation in the A.R. program will be included in supplementing our core ELA curriculum. For each student, a point goal target will be auto calculated by AR. In Room 18, there will be a reward system in place for each student that meets their point goal target at the end of each Trimester.
This is an individualized goal based upon the following factors:
Your child’s current reading IRL (independent reading level) as determined by the AR Program
An expected reading time of 20 minutes at home Monday-Thursday
You can help support your student’s engagement and view the total points earned at any time by checking their “Bookshelf” in the A.R. access at home. Follow the steps to access A.R. from your home computer:
Shell Beach Elementary Home Page
Click “Programs”
Click “Library and A.R.”
Click the “Accelerated Reader” bar and search for a book title’s dot color; or enter A.R. program with your child’s first and last name separated by a space bar and enter their 4 digit lunch number to view the Bookshelf. Most students have memorized the 4 digit number. Please message me on Parent Square if you need it!
The movement to a next level dot color range is separate from this point goal incentive and will be reassessed at each Trimester by giving a STAR test to determine movement. This program is just one component to providing your child with rich text experiences, exposure to more abstract text, and repeated practice for comprehension of appropriately leveled text. Thank you for your support in helping to monitor progress in this program.
Taking AR Tests
Students have the chance to take AR tests throughout our average school day, within our classroom, any time they finish an activity early. We have 1:1 chromebooks for every classroom, available for daily use! for structured lessons and define, "May Do" time. They also have opportunities during recesses every day, in the Library/Computer Lab. In addition, students may take AR tests during our weekly scheduled Library and Computer Lab time. The Library is also open for students to take AR tests (and get new library books) during AM recess and during PM recess. Students have plenty of opportunities to take AR tests every day of the week. I highly recommend setting up an account with Home Connect to be notified via email every time your student takes an AR test. Click on the Home Connect link on this page to follow the instructions to sign up.
