Grade 7A Bible memory work 2025-26
Mrs. Van Pelt:
Reading: We are currently reading and responding to short stories in our Unit, "Building Community".
Writing: Students are working on an article response. We will be discussing our AOW responses this week. After that, we will write mystery stories based on Harris Burdick.
WWW/Vocab: Students have an exercise book with all of their words and definitions. To find flashcards or other games/quizzes online, look for the root words at quizlet.com. "Miss/Mit" homework due Monday; quiz on Thursday, Jan. 15.
Art: Some students are finishing Pointillism. We will be reviewing Colour Theory and Art Theory test and hope to start glazing our Clay Snowman.
Geography: We are continuing Unit 2: Natural Resources, this week. Students are learning about Canada's resources, and using atlas skills to plot Canada's resources on a map; as well, they will be creating an organizer to capture their learning about natural resources in the world.
Science: We are continuing our unit, Pure Substances and Mixtures. We hope to learn more about atoms, elements, compounds, and mixtures through labs, slideshows, and videos. This week we will continue to learn about solutes and solvents, and Water: the Universal Solvent. Quiz about Solutions coming soon. Date tba.
Mr. Kooy:
Bible: Our current unit is a study of the Gospels- the books of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. We are learning about each gospel writer's themes, intended audience and purpose. There will be a Bible test on Wednesday, Jan 21. A study review guide will be provided.
Math: Our current topic is "Patterns and Relationships", and includes the skills of identifying pattern rules and extending sequences. We will have an end of chapter test sometime during the week of Jan 12-15.

What 7B is up to...

Reading: We are reading "Touching Spirit Bear" by Ben Mikaelsen. We are learning how to create deep questions, summarize main ideas, pull out important passages, make connections, and visualize what is going on in the story to help us have a deeper understanding of the books themes.
Writing: We are analyzing and forming opinions on current events going on around the world.
Math: We are identifying, comparing, creating, and translating growing and shrinking patterns. Using scatter plots and tables of value to display our patterns.
Geography: Geography Climate tests just went home. Those who studied and returned their study sheet did very well. We are learning about natural resources, focusing on the sustainable use of renewable resources, non-renewable resources and flow resources. We are going to begin a final project which brings together all of our learning in geography so far.
Science: We have been studying our new science unit on Pure Substances and Mixtures. We have been learning about particle theory and how all matter is made up of matter. This week we explored seperating mechanical mixtures. Next week we look at solvents and solutes.
Bible: We are preparing for our Introduction to the Gospel unit test on Tuesday.
Art: We are learning about Tom Thompson and the Group of Seven, and attempting to replicate their style painting.
Vocab: We are learning about the root word "port" this week.

Grade 8A -Mrs. Eelkema (updated Jan 9)
Math: This week, we are beginning a new math unit on perimeter and area. We’ll learn how to measure the distance around shapes and the space inside them, using formulas and real-world examples.
Reading: We are working through a series of short stories, focusing on how we respond to injustice.
Writing and Geography: Over the next few weeks, students will be working on non-fiction writing, integrating these skills with our geography projects.

Health: We have been discussing friendships and boundaries, exploring what quality friendships are like and how we can establish boundaries when necessary.
Art: We are working on a wire sculpture of the human body. The end product will be a sculptural portrait of a human expressing an emotion or movement.
Bible: We continue our study of the early church in the book of Acts. We are learning about the first martyr, Stephen and will be begin a newspaper report assignment on the stoning of Stephen. We have a test coming up next week; a review sheet is posted to Google Classroom.

Science: We are working through our unit, Fluids, studying what Fluids are, investigating fluids on the move, and learning about the Great Molasses Flood, density, and buoyancy through labs, slideshows, and videos. Students have been creating videos about Fluids. Videos need to be edited and added to 8A science googleclassroom before JAN. 5!

Grade 8B 2025/2026 - Ms. Miedema (updated Jan 9th)
Reading: We have started our next novel study, Inside Out and Back Again, that tells the story of Ha and her family who leave Vietnam and move to America during the Vietnam War.
Math: We have started our unit on Measurement - focusing on calculating the circumference and area of circles.
Geography: Students are working with a partner to explore the factors that contribute to the quality of life in different countries around the world. This is a large project - most work will be done in class, but there may be a bit of finish up that happens at home. Students will need a tri-fold board for their final product. Research is due on Friday, January 9th. Paragraphs are due on Friday, January 16th. Students also need to have a tri-fold board at school by the 16th. Final projects are due on Friday, January 23rd.
