AP Biology
April 22, 2024
Hello AP! As you know by now, the AP board is releasing the 2024 practice/review videos starting today. I will be assigning these through the AP board site. You will need to take notes AND you must do the problems embedded within the video. Please stop the video and do the problems then check your work afterwards. If you mindlessly watch the videos, then you will gain no advantage to your long lasting understanding of the material. Please do this right. This is for you! May 16th is coming up very fast.
As discussed in class, we will be doing practice tests in class. Please refer to the schedule below as we have to navigate the school's testing schedule for CAASP and CAST exams.
Thank you!

I placed the syllabus at the bottom of this page.
Your AP Lab Manual is online.
I will go page by page in your book for Unit 1, which covers chapters 1-3. You will be required to read the 3 chapters, and take notes. I will give lectures in class and I will be posting videos on this website for you to watch to aide in your understanding. Your first unit test will be on Thursday, September 14, 2023.
Homework assigned:
1. Daily Videos/Book Notes due Thursday, September, 07, 2023. Covers chapters 1, 2, and 3.
2. Unit 1 Homework assigned on AP College Board due as follows: FRQs (15) due Friday, September 08, 2023 by 12:00 noon and MCQs (55) due on Monday, September 11, 2023 by 4:00 pm. The homework takes quite some time, especially earlier in the year while you are learning patterns in the questions and types of questions. On the test in May, MCQs are allotted 1.5 minutes each. Long FRQS get about 22-25 min and short questions get about 12-15 min each. Normally, the tests have included 60 mcqs and 2 Long/4 short frqs. I will be checking this as May gets closer for any possible changes. You may look up questions and watch videos or ask questions to help with your homework. If you do look up an answer, take the time to understand the answer as opposed to copying and pasting. You may work with your classmates on homework as well. You absolutely must turn it in what you have completed on time or you will earn a zero for that assignment.
3. Unit 1 Exam Thursday, September 14, 2023.
I will be adding to this list for Unit 1 Videos. We will watch some of these in class. These videos are different from the Daily Videos that you are assigned for homework.

If the materials that I need come in on time, we will do the unit 1 lab on TBD. I will show you how to type a formal lab report. You will be given a rubric to follow for your grade in labs. I have an excellent example for you to follow.
Please have your parent/guardian write a note that they have read the syllabus and please have them sign the note as well. The signature is due on Monday, August 28, 2023.
Syllabus
AP Biology
AP Biology is an introductory college-level biology course. Students cultivate their understanding of biology through inquiry-based investigations as they explore topics like evolution, energetics, information storage and transfer, and system interactions.
Goal:
A grade of "C" or better in Biology fulfills the life science requirement for UC and Cal-State A-G entrance prerequisites. It is our goal that every student masters the material to the level necessary to qualify for admission to a four-year college or university. Passing this course also meets the life science requirement for high school graduation. Students must maintain and average of 72.5% to avoid being dropped from the class.

Campbell Biology in Focus second edition will be our main text. Notes from video clips, instructor lectures, and peer research will complement the quest to master the “Standard” subject strands throughout the course. Each student will be responsible for the care and use of their text, and will be required to bring their books to class each day as requested by the instructor.
NO EXTRA CREDIT
LATE WORK POLICY: School related activities ARE NOT considered absences; have someone else turn in or email your assignments on the date due. Assignments due dates are listed on the AP Board under assignments.
ACADEMIC DISHONESTY Any student who commits or facilitates academic dishonesty will receive no credit on the assignment, no higher than a U in citizenship during that grading period.
Classroom Behavior
● RESPECT
o Each other’s learning experience and environment
o Instructions offered for lab safety and procedure
o YOURSELF, as all of us have an innate curiosity to know how stuff works; let the natural scientist in you help guide your ability to learn and succeed.
o The clock
● Be in your seat transcribing the appropriate learning targets for the day at the start of class. Those not started or finished with their targets at the start of class will be marked tardy.
● Raise your hand and wait until called upon if you have a question, comment, or answer. (Shouting out of turn will result in detention.)
● Use QUIET classroom voices whenever working in groups.
Student’s Responsibility
● Bring a notebook that is specific to this class. This will be an interactive notebook and will be assessed for grade.
● Bring at least two working writing instruments, one of which should be a pencil.
● Bring a Liberty Lion Positive attitude
● Ask questions if you don’t understand the procedure, lesson, or rationale for an assignment or assessed grade.
● Complete and turn in assignments on time.
● Do ‘my best’ even if it’s a day you’d rather not.
Teacher’s responsibility
● Prepare engaging lessons that help make some connection (relevance) to the state standards and our everyday life.
● Instruct, assess, and interact with all students in a fair, professional, and encouraging manner.
● Return assignments collected for assessment within 48 hours to a week depending on the size of the assignment and go over the assignments to clarify questions and misunderstandings.
● Answer emails within 24 hours on business days.
At LCHS, all students enrolled in an AP course must take the AP exam for all AP courses in which a student is enrolled. Each AP exam costs $97 for students who do not qualify for free/reduced lunch and $40 for those who do qualify. While we keep a student's free/reduced lunch status confidential, the AP Coordinator does verify free/reduced lunch status for those paying $40. Exam fees are due no later than November 15, 2023. If a student drops an AP course after November 15, 2023, they will be charged a $40 exam cancellation fee per dropped course that will be paid from the fee(s) they have already paid. An AP student must earn at least a 70% in each AP course in which they are enrolled at the end of the first semester to continue their enrollment in each AP course. Students earning less than 70% on their semester 1 report card in any AP course will be removed from that AP course and will owe the $40 exam cancellation fee in the same manner as if they dropped the course after November 15, 2023. AP students have until November 14, 2023 to drop an AP course without incurring the $40 exam cancellation fee. After November 14, 2023, students are expected to remain enrolled in all their AP courses through at least the end of the first semester.
