DISCOVER's Community Service Requirement Explained- Part of the DISCOVER Academy's program incorporates a community service component. The idea behind this is for the students to participate in community service-type endeavors which involve science and/or technology in the "real world." However, as we seek to find more activities like the California Coastal Clean Up and electronic waste recycling, other activities that we publicize to you through these e-blasts and the "Community Service" pages on our websites will work to qualify for this requirement. In the 7th grade, students are to complete three hours per trimester. With much assistance and leadership from a group of 6th, 7th, and 8th grade parents forming the Community Service Committee, we aim to provide information on at least 12 hours of opportunities per trimester. If you have activities which your family and/or child participates in which you feel might qualify for this requirement, simply contact one of your child's teachers and he/she will let you know. It is also okay to "double-dip," meaning activities which your child does to satisfy similar requirements for other organizations such as scouting, ASB, etc. can work for us at the same time. A copy of the record sheet for your child to use to log his/her hours is on the "Community Service" page of the teacher websites. Near the end of the third trimester, all DISCOVER students will be completing a reflective project about their community service experiences. Part of the grade for this project will be the successful completion of all nine hours for the year.
*No carry over hours!
Note: These events are NOT considered school events but are presented as opportunities for your child to satisfy the DISCOVER Community Service hours requirement. Parents are required to attend and supervise their children. Students are not to be dropped off and left at events. Sequoia staff members are not required to attend these events and are not responsible for supervision of students should they attend.
