8th Grade Grading Policy

End of 6 weeks Test (15%)

    • A test will be given at the end of each 6 weeks that measure a student's mastery of our learning targets
    • The test will be weighted at 15%, consisting of all content learned over the 6 weeks.

Quizzes (55%)

    • Quizzes that measure a student's incremental mastery of our learning targets will receive a quiz grade.
    • Quizzes are weighted at 55%, consisting of:
        • Quizzes; and
        • Major projects, papers, or presentations.
      • All grades in each of these categories will be weighted equally.
    • The number of assessments for each six weeks will vary.

Daily Work – 30%

    • Daily work that gauges incremental learning progress will count under the Daily Work category.
    • Grades may include:
      • Formative assessments such as skill checks, incremental learning checks, or interviews;
      • Independent practice / homework;
      • Interactive Notebook (INB) work, such as starters, notes, processing assignments, summaries, or reflections;
      • Academic behaviors that reflect student ownership of learning, such as on-time completion of assigned tasks or peer collaboration; or
      • Other work that helps students to master the skills and knowledge included in our learning targets.

Late Work Policy

    • It is critical that students complete all work in a timely manner. Mathematics is an incremental skill; the skills we are developing today are the ones that we will be building upon tomorrow.
    • To reflect the importance of keeping up with this work, therefore, all late work will receive an automatic grade deduction.
      • An “M” (Missing) will be entered in the grade book—which averages in as a zero—until I receive any late assignments. The reduced grade for late work will replace this “M” at that time.
      • Work that is received between 1-5 days after the assigned due date: 20-point penalty, for a maximum of an 80%.
      • Work that is received 6 or more days after the assigned due date: the "missing" will be replaced be a ZERO (0%).
      • Late work will not be accepted after the 6-week grading cycle has ended.

Redo Policy

What IS eligible for a replacement grade?

    • Quiz grade replacement
      • Grades in the Quiz category are eligible for a grade replacement based on the score of the initial grade of the corresponding 6 Week Test that covers the same learning targets.
      • Grade replacements are available for all quizzes, regardless of the original grade. (Yes, no matter how low you originally scored on your quiz, you are eligible to have your grade replaced if your 6 weeks test grade is higher.)
    • Test grade replacement
      • If students are not satisfied with their initial 6 weeks test grade, they may opt to come to tutorials to take a retake of the test within 5 school days.
      • The higher of the two Test grades will become the official grade of record. A retake Test will only ever raise a grade. If the original Test grade was higher than the retake grade, the original test grade will stand unaltered.
      • If the retake Test grade is higher than the original grade, this will not replace any summative quiz grades.
      • You have ONE WEEK -- five (5) school days -- to complete your retake Test. The week begins on the day that your graded assessment is returned to you.
        • If there are extenuating circumstances that will prevent you from meeting this deadline, you must make me aware of them prior to the deadline.
    • Redo/retake opportunities will NOT be available for daily work. The original grade already reflects a learning process and, as such, is NOT available for replacement.
