Sept. 9 (S+A blocks) - Today we put our notes on email etiquette into practice with two activities.
In the first block, we worked with four sample emails. Each student started independently, using a highlighter or pen to mark five strengths or areas for improvement in each email based on the notes we took last class. Afterward, we came together as a class to create a final list of five key points for each email. These were collected before the end of the block.
In the second block, each group was given one of eight real-life case studies. Our task was to write a proper email to a staff member, coach, or principal connected to the scenario. We had to make sure the email included the correct address, accurate details, and clear communication. If we weren’t sure of information, we could use classroom resources or ask Mr. Wilds to help us look it up. By the end of class, all groups submitted their emails for grading.
Sept. 8 - Welcome back from the weekend!
Today, we started by reviewing how to organize our binders for the school year. Mr. Wilds showed us a Google Slide deck with a visual checklist of the supplies we’ll need to bring to every class. For anyone missing items, the slide deck will also be posted in Google Classroom so it can be reviewed later.
Next, we took notes on email etiquette to help us communicate more effectively with teachers and coaches. We carefully went over what should—and shouldn’t—be included in a proper email.
In our next class, we will be doing a group activity, applying the lessons that we learned about today.
Sept. 4 - Today marked our first day following the regular school schedule instead of the modified one we’ve been using. Yesterday, students were invited to join our Google Classroom. While some teachers may provide class codes, it is important that students always join using their school email addresses, not personal ones. In past years, we’ve seen problems when parents logged in or students joined with personal accounts. Using school credentials ensures proper communication and avoids access being blocked.
This morning, students used the school devices provided to them and had five minutes to join my Google Classroom as well as any other sections from other teachers if they hadn’t already.
Once everyone was set up, we went over the main features of Google Classroom. I explained how I will use both the Stream tab and the Classwork tab, and we reviewed several key posts already available on the Stream page. These include:
The course outline
Days of the cycle and PED support times
Instructions on how to sign up for PED support sessions
Links to digitally access Scholastic Scope, which will serve as our workbook for the year
Students are encouraged to become familiar with these posts, as they will be frequently used throughout the school year.
After reshuffling the seating plan which will be in place for the next couple of cycle of days, we started discussions on what is a social contract, which will be a topic that we shall be exploring and working on in the next few blocks.
Sept. 2 - Today was our kick-off day for Grade 8! Mr. Wilds went over what this year will look like—what’s expected of you in class, how to stay on top of your work, and how we treat each other. You also got a course outline with all this information, so make sure to keep it in your binder for reference.
We also met Miss Tremblay, our student teacher. She’ll be with us until mid-December. At times over the next few weeks, someone from McGill University will visit to watch our class so they can give feedback to Miss Tremblay.
As the week goes on, Google Classroom will be set up for you, and your parents will be contacted with important information.
