AP Exam Registration
AP exam registration closes November 4, 2022. Any student currently enrolled in an AP course must "join" the AP classroom in order to have an exam ordered by the deadline. If you do not "join" before the deadline, you will run the risk of not receiving a weighted grade and a $40 late fee per exam if you decide to register after the deadline.
Students not enrolled in an AP class but who would like to take an AP exam may register for the Exam Only section of an AP subject. Please email the AP Coordinator at c.goettee@laschools.net.
The Advanced Placement (AP) program has been a part of the curriculum at Los Alamos High School for many years, and has continued to grow in popularity among our students. Over the past several years, over 300 students have participated in AP courses each year. With qualifying exam scores, students can earn credit, advanced placement, or both at the majority of colleges and universities in the United States and Canada.
Advanced Placement (AP) courses are college-level courses offered in high school. Students who take an AP class are encouraged to take the AP exam at the end of the course. However, AP courses provide students with an opportunity for learning that goes beyond just facts and figures. The rich course material, classroom discussions and demanding assignments typical of AP courses will help students develop the knowledge and critical thinking skills expected of college students. What’s more, by participating in AP, students have the opportunity to earn college credit and to stand out in the college admission process.
Students who take AP courses develop confidence and learn the study habits and time management skills necessary for success in college, as well as the knowledge and critical thinking skills expected of college students. In addition, students are required by the state of New Mexico to complete at least one credit in a Dual Credit, Honors, online or AP course.
Students who take the full year of the AP course and take the AP exam in May and receive an “A” or “B” for the course will receive a weighted grade for that course, thus boosting the overall GPA. Many colleges will give college credit for a course if a student scores a 3 or higher on an exam. However, it is important to check with each college’s policy regarding AP coursework.
Most AP courses require that students complete a summer assignment prior to the start of classes in the fall. Students must recognize the stringent time commitment expected in AP coursework, and practice good organizational and time management skills. Students are also expected to take and pay for their AP exams in the spring. In order to receive a weighted grade, students are required to take both semesters of the class AND the AP exam in May.
While students may be identified as having the potential to succeed in an AP course, other factors are also considered when deciding participation in AP, including teacher recommendations and prerequisites for the class. Students should consult with their teachers, parents, guidance counselor and advisor before making the commitment to an AP course.
The fee per AP exam for the 2022-2023 school year is $97. (A $40 deposit is due by November 4th, the remaining payment is due by May 1, 2023). Fees may be paid here. Please indicate that it is for an AP exam. If you have any questions or believe that you are eligible for a fee waiver, email c.goettee@laschools.net.
