UIL JOURNALISM

KHS is very proud of its growing UIL Academic team. We have success, and that is due to diligence and dedication from our students and staff. We earned 2nd place in the district last spring behind a very strong Carthage HS team.

We are two year Journalism District Team Champions winning in 2023 and 2024. We had four writers advance to Regionals at SFA on 

April 27, 2024.

We are proud to be the home of the 2021 4A State Headline Writing Champion, Madison Donovan, who during her senior year received a coveted scholarship from the UIL/TILF. Madison also graduated Valedictorian of her class in 2022. This could be YOU! Join our group and challenge YOURSELF to be the best.

We work hard to be a competitive team in a very challenging academic district. Please join if you want to represent Kilgore High School and compete against schools in our district.

Journalism UIL Academic team will meet before school on Mondays or after school on Wednesdays as needed. Some students prefer to write and submit pieces for review on their own time to prepare for the competitions. Let me know which you prefer, and I will work with you. I know how busy high school is, but I want to make practice time available so students can push themselves to write better and medal at UIL meets.

Our plan is to write each week and help each other improve. 

Also, we need to make every effort to READ good writing in print newspapers and online newspapers to try to get inspired!
