Frequently Asked Questions

How does the internship program work?

The first step to securing an internship is completing the internship application and submitting it to Dr. Mace. The internship application outlines how you can earn credit through the internship program. Check out the About the Program and Application pages for more details.

What kind of time commitment is it? That is, how much time do I have to spend at my internship?

You can earn 0.25 credits for every 40 hours you work at your internship. So, if you’d like to earn a full credit, you will need to spend a total of 160 hours at your internship.

What if I spend less than 40 hours at my internship?

If you spend less than 40 hours at your internship, you are not able to earn credit. However, you are still permitted to participate in the internship. It will just be listed for 0 credits on your transcript. This will not negatively impact your GPA.

What if I spend more than 160 hours at my internship?

You can earn up to 2.0 internship credits, which means that you can spend up to 320 hours at your internship. Remember, for every 40 hours you spend there, you earn 0.25 credits.

Can I leave school early and/or during the day to go to my internship site?

Yes. Please see your counselor to ensure that you have at least 2 periods at the beginning or end of the day to attend your internship.

Can I do an internship at the place where I currently work?

It depends. Talk with Dr. Mace to see if this is an option for you.

Do I have to be able to drive in order to have an internship?

While being able to drive affords you more internship options, we do have some internships available in and/or near the high school for those who are not able to drive.

What happens if I realize that my internship site is not a good fit for me?

See Dr. Mace as soon as possible.

What do I do if I’m sick and cannot attend my internship site when I am scheduled to be there?

Remember that you have made a commitment to the organization where you are doing your internship. Regular attendance is extremely important! However, if you are too ill to go to your internship on a day you’re scheduled to be there contact your internship supervisor and Dr. Mace to let them know you are unable to attend.

Is there an internship class I have to attend at KAHS?

Nope. Contact Dr. Mace (kmace@kasd.org) if you need to schedule a meeting.

Do I have to complete any assignments for my internship?

Yes! There are several assignments you must complete for the internship program which include but are not limited to: weekly reflection journal, weekly timesheet, and final project. Most assignments are done through Canvas.

How difficult is it to get an internship?

It depends on what your interests are. Some internships are easier to secure than others.

Can I get an internship in the medical field?

Yes. We have partnerships with some area hospitals where HS students can intern. Applications for these internships are usually due in late December/early January for the following school year. So, if you think you're interested in a medical internship, plan ahead and contact Dr. Mace (kmace@kasd.org) ASAP.
