Philadelphia Academy is home to a very unique classroom. This class is a room used for teaching all of Mr. Mottershead's science classes. The class has a multipurpose layout with an area for normal class routines, as well as lab space for experimentation, and then in the back 1/3rd of the room is a large scale aquaponic system. The plant wall can hold over 800 plants, which is connected to two 300 gallon tanks that house Tilapia and Gold Fish. Aquaponics by definition from Merriam-Webster "is a system of growing plants in the water that has been used to cultivate aquatic organisms." The room itself is an ongoing project that students each year play a part in the building and improving of this vast system. The class and its related clubs fundraise to continue to add to the system.
